I wrote earlier under "frustration setting in" about depth with my mxt. I went out again,, ground was 78,used fac presets in coin mode, stock coil. I did find some coins at 4 inches most were 0 to 2 inches, and a 12"silver chain at about 3".
I found a penney at 1" and reburied it at 5". I swept over it and got no signal at all cranked the gain and still nadder. I came home and did an air test and again at fac presets in coin mode with ground locked and noticed a quarter will ring out at 7" ,dimes and pennies less, maybe 3" .Also when they did ring it seemed the coin was off center to the coil, about at the edge of the hole in the coil.
Also when huting it would make a high static noise I never heard before,I am familiar with the threshold noise and this was totally different, like loud static on an am radio station.
Are all these instances normal? I think maybe I am expecting too much out of the machine.I have had it nearly a year and last year I had tons of fun with it.But this year it just aggarvates me.
I hope your knowledge can bring some light to my issues. You seem to be a very knowledgeable person when it comes to issues like I have.
HH and thanks

My soil reading is 79 to 84, and I can get dimes in the CJ mode, nail level reject, to a measured 9" in the ground. First thing that I would do is to take the battery pack out, and make sure that all the batteries are in proper alignment. Second, I'd swap coils with another MXT, and see if that fixed the problem. Are you operating in the "ground" tracking mode? If you are in the "locked" mode, and the ground balance setting is WAY off, then that would reduce depth. But from what you've stated, I'd say that your MXT needs to be sent to Sweet Home for repair.

I wrote earlier under "frustration setting in" about depth with my mxt. I went out again,, ground was 78,used fac presets in coin mode, stock coil. I did find some coins at 4 inches most were 0 to 2 inches, and a 12"silver chain at about 3".... I read that and a few others pots related to poor depth and/or poor TID quality. I was going to reply but since this one's nearer to the top I'll just do it here.
I found a penney at 1" and reburied it at 5". I swept over it and got no signal at all cranked the gain and still nadder. I came home and did an air test and again at fac presets in coin mode with ground locked and noticed a quarter will ring out at 7" ,dimes and pennies less, maybe 3".... An air test with a 3" penny or dime response suggests:
1.. almost dead batteries
2.. bad coil
3.. detector in need of service
4.. any combination of 1, 2 & 3
Also when they did ring it seemed the coin was off center to the coil, about at the edge of the hole in the coil.... # 1 cause is that you were not holding and presenting the coin as if "flat" to the coil. Instead, it was canted. Another cause could be a damaged/defective coil.
Also when huting it would make a high static noise I never heard before,I am familiar with the threshold noise and this was totally different, like loud static on an am radio station.... Could have been:
1.. Outside RF interference
2.. Coil problem
3.. Detector problem
4.. Any combination of 1, 2 & 3
Are all these instances normal?... No, not when you consider all of them together.
I think maybe I am expecting too much out of the machine.I have had it nearly a year and last year I had tons of fun with it.But this year it just aggarvates me.... You should be having fun because that's what it is all about. While it could be you, it is probably the equipment.
I hope your knowledge can bring some light to my issues. You seem to be a very knowledgeable person when it comes to issues like I have.... Thanks for the comments, but at this point I agree with Jim's suggestions. First thing to do, always, is check the batteries. Make sure they are all inserted in the proper position AFTER you test each individual AA battery.
If that doesn't correct the problem, try another oil. Visit any White's Dealer or get a hold of another MXT user and give it a try.
If changing the coil provides 'proper' function, then the issue is with the coil. If not, it is with the detector.
My suggestion is to write down a good description of what your MXT is, or isn't, doing. Send it and the coil to White's service department. Most likely still under warranty.

Thanks monte and Jim for your input. I went out to my most familiar place tonite to give the detector 1 more try. Well it worked fine, found coins at 7 inches with no problem and threshold did not have the static like before.
I read your comments and it dawned on me that were I was last I was very close (within) 25 yards to some rail road tracks. Not ordainary rr tracks they got the high speed electric train running on them duhhhhhh call me a dummy it is ok lol.
1st air test I did was in the house so I went outside and air tested, being carefull to hold coins flat to the coil and again I got good depth on my tests, and coins rang out dead center of the coil.
I can't thank you guys and this forum enough.Without it I would be in total darkness beacause I know absoloutely no one around here that md's and can give me advice.
Thanks again and Happy Hunting
p:s: Decided to get a dd coil also, probably a 5"excelerator to help deal with the high ground readings here.
