I replaced my metal coil screw on my Silver umax with a nylon one and it seems to have lowered the ED-120 just a teeny. I notice a lot more clicking around iron objects-just this week I found a set of keys that were more like tin than brass with a large steel ring that was well rusted laying in such a manner to cover the keys and it gave a "splat" with a kinda broken signal that I had apparently missed before. I also found an iron buckle for a strap that did the same. Even more noticeable are the signals near trash and the nickels really blast out now. I'm hoping it's true and that I've moved a step closer to approximating the Compadre in iron reject. I guess I should experiment with all metal and see if there's any difference there.

I always figured that no matter if the bolt is plastic/nylon or metal it shouldn't make a difference, the bolt is moving with the coil so it shouldn't be detected. But then again I could be wrong, it wouldn't be the first time. Wait a minute it would be the first time :) Steve.

My understanding, Steve, is that the electromagnetic field is slightly distorted by it's presence and that several users back in the 90's noticed improved performance by replacing the metal bolt-which is what I did on my Royal. I did notice a slight improvement like the depth and the Royal did a little better on the masking-started picking up some fairly small foil that was normally disced out. Never even thought of doing it to my Silver as the word was that most newer detector mfg.'s compensated for it and that that was the reason for the newer detectors coming out nowadays with the nylon bolt. I'm almost positive I*m not imagining this. The reactions I get to the nickel are really more noticeable. I am glad the weather's getting better as my favorite spots are starting to fill back up with goodies and I can get out with my Silver again. I get in my competition hunt form and literally fly across these schools, etc. and I can pinpoint faster than with a detector with the pinpointing feature. What a detector!
