Monte/anyone Help/14in. EXc. coil

Monte,
Put my new 14in. EXcelerator coil on my MXT tonight and it air tests a dime at only 6 inches. My stock 950 coil air tests to 8inches. I talked to JW at Kelly Co. and he said they would replace it ,no problem but wanted to make sure it wasn't something I'm doing wrong. I ground balanced in a nice quite patch of ground. My ground measures a mild 55-60. I'm running in the relic mode, trigger in the middle, discrimination set at 9 oclock. I'm thinking if this coil is supposed to find dimes at 15-18in. in the ground then I should at least be getting 15-18in. in the air. If this is the best this coil can do, then the stock coil outperforms it by far.

Hmm, you didn't mention what you did with the ground balance switch after you balanced. You did remember to lock it right?
It is an easy to miss item in the owner's manual. Lock the GB switch for proper operation in air tests. Hope this helps and sorry for butting in. HH.

I beleive if you are going to do air test set your ground tracking to lock before turning on the detector and keep it there. I beleive this is a preset when doing air test. Keep everything set at the preset marks too.
Now if you are doing the test in a test garden then i would ground balance after you change each coil and lock it, then do your test. If you are in a area with a lot of trash than the stock coil may have more depth too as it sees less trash that can mask a good signal as these bigger coils are made for areas that are cleaner.

Tried turning on the machine in the lock position and also turning on,pumping coil then switching to lock. Still only air tests a dime to 5 or 6in.. I get a signal and a VDI number of 77 nicely at 4in. but fades at 5in.. Thanks for any comments guys.

The stock coil also signals a buried dime deeper than the 14in. EX..Went out in the middle of a field to get away from any trash and the 950 coil signaled on a dime buried at a measured 6-7in and the 14in. EX.coil faded at 4-5in.. Plan on sending EX. coil back and trying another one.

I like to base my decision making on personal experience more than advertising claims. This is a general application statement, too, and isn't specific to these coils or their supplier. It is experience that has shown me there comes a point in search coil size increases where you start to loose responsiveness to smaller targets. From that point on the operator starts to enjoy the benefits of large-target responsiveness without the annoyance of small-target interference.
Oh, I know I might have confused a few with the above statement so lt me explain. In general terms we might consider an 8" serarch coil to be the 'standard' for comparison. Advantages and disadvantages will apply to various sizes and types of coils that are larger or smaller than the 'standard' 8" coil. Remember, too, that a lot depends upon the detector the coil is affixed to, and the operator at the other end (settings and manipulation).
I know that by going to a smaller-than-standard coil I am going to lose some depth of detection, but not a lot until I am radically different in size. Also, going to a larger-than-standard coil I am going to see an increase in depth of deetction, but not much after I reach a point where a small target doesn't have enough size/mass to disrupt the electromagnetic field.
I am sure you might have read or heard someone make the suggestion that a coil will detect to a depth that is about equal to the coil's diameter. This is a very, very rough guideline to use. If we just take a look at the concentric coils offered by White's and read the reports of many with in-the-field experience, we can note that there is very little difference in depth performance between the 950 coil and an 8" coil.
I have a friend who used to use a thin-profile 8" Blue Max coil on his XLT because he got depth performance he claimed to be as good, or better, that he got with his standard 950 coil! I know that I have used some models where I felt the same way. Matter of fact, I have a preference for the 6

I would bet that the 950 would hit nicer on a dime-sized target than would a 14", 15" or 16" coil. If you were dealing with a silver dollar, the 'edge' might favor the 14".
I get a dime/penny target a little deeper with my 12

Obviously, the Excellerator coil you have is faulty. If JW has agreed to replace it, take advantage of it. If you scroll down a ways you will see my in-depth report comparing various coils. A synopsis of that test is as follows: MXT, ground reading 79 (very hot soil), same batteries, same discrimination level (preset) same targets (my test garden) thus all parameters were the same, EXCEPT coil AND gain setting. Results: White's 6x4 DD, maximum stable gain setting +3, maximum "good" signal on buried dime, 6". White's 10x6 DD, maximum gain setting +3, dime to 7". White's MXT 950 stock coil, maximum gain +1, dime to 7". White's 14" DD, maximum gain +3, dime to 8". Kellyco's 14" Excellerator, maximum gain preset, dime to 6". As regards your comment about the 14" Excellerator, "I'm thinking if this coil is supposed to find dimes to 15" to 18"...." frankly, Rich, such expectations are ETREMELY optimistic, as Monte and I have both reported. Hope this helps; HH jim

I did have much higher expectations for this coil partly because of Kellyco's discription of it on it's web site and before I bought it I asked more than one person at Kellyco "how deep will I find dimes with it?" One person told me twice as deep as the stock 950 ,another told me 15-18in. another said 12-14in. Any way I appreciate everyones help on this forum and all the thought and time put into your responces. Monte, I still have a 5in. EXc. coming. It's on back order. Don't know if I will try another 14in. but this one is definetly going back.

a little more coverage and a little better depth. Don't expect miricales. Just appreciate the subtile improvements over the stock coil. The standard 950 is a very good performing coil which makes it a little difficult to improve upon, but I really like my 12

.... I, too, read Kellyco's ads stating "depth nearly doubles," and although HIGHLY sceptical, I prefer to keep an open mind on such matters, so I bought, and tested, one. The results I have already posted. Prior to buying my 14" Excellerator, I posted requests on this Forum for input from owners of both the 12.5 and 14" Excellerators. From the responses generated, most of them via private email, I learned that a very high perecentage of owners reported that the first (and sometimes second) coil they received were faulty. Furthermore, the opinions of the owners varied notably. About 50% stated that they saw NO difference in performance over the stock 950. About 25% claimed that the 950 got SLIGHTLY better performance, and about 25% claimed that they got SLIGHTLY better performance with the Excellerator. Thus, the "average" consensus of opinion is that the 950 is just as good, depth-wise, as the bigger Excellerators, BUT that the Excellerators DO provide much better ground coverage per sweep. As regard the high percentage of "dud" coils reported, even the most ardent supporters of the Excellerators on this Forum, Monte and Ray, will acknowledge that their first (and second?) coils they got were "bad." But, kudos to Kellyco, and especially JW, for being willing to stand behind the product, and "go the extra mile" by correcting the situation. Mind you, Kellyco does not manufacture the coils, they just sell them, thus Kellyco cannot be blamed for poor quality control issues. In fact, in a recent post, JW states that they were testing prototypes which (hopefully) will improve the performance of the "new generation" Excellerators. One last thought: most folks will find greater use, and need, for coils which are SMALLER than stock, rather than LARGER than stock. Your choice of a 5" Excellerator will likely prove to be a good one. Hope this helps; HH jim
