Monday Hunt...VERY old unidentified button, 1785 Spanish 1/2 reale, etc.

This spot I've been hunting is producing relics from early native American, Revolutionary and even Civil War. Found a very old pewter button with a cast integral shank with a marking I've never seen before. Anybody have any ideas? The Spanish 1/2 reale is in terrific shape (1785). This spot is an eroded river bank and the stuff that has washed out of it are in excellent shape. note the square (cut) nails, they look like they were made yesterday! A few flat buttons and what I think is an oval cuff-link half, musketball, etc.

I love the colonial artifacts. Looks like you have a hot spot. I'm not sure but I think the markings on the button might be initials. Looks like HJ. I say J because back in the colonial days their J looked like an I. I could be wrong but can you post a bigger pic of it please. Thanks. Congrads on your finds.

Don Troiani said the same thing about it possibly being initials. Thanks Stan.

Hey Paul, I told you wrong. Sorry!!!After doing a little research I found out that the H's looks like I's and not the J's. Here's a pic of a wine bottle seal that I have found and the initials are H:L. Which stands for Handcock Lee. Let us know if you find out any more info on your button. Hope you find more artifacts there and post them. HH

That's good info Stan. Looks like the same letter to me! But what does that make the first letter? The shank when you are looking at the button pic posted is parallel to the bottom of your screen. Can't wait to get back there. I know there is a belt plate in there somewhere!! HH

Congrats on the Spanish! I never get tired of seeing the guy with the big nose! <img src="/metal/html/lol.gif" border=0 width=15 height=15 alt=":lol"> Where is Carolina Detectors?
