Mohave running a different coil

Anyone running a different coil on the Mohave

There was a post on one of the forums with the clean sweep finding some gold.
And Monte posted some tests with the 5.75 on the nail board compared t a few different machines.
Been thinking about getting a clean sweep to try on mine.
Figured it would help at a few parks were I've picked up a lot of nice fresh drops.

It is a combination of what features (controls) the detector provides to get the best performance out of an optional search coil. What the particular uses for the detector and coil might be. And naturally how the detector and coil perform for the tasks you plan to use it for.

As you can see by my Signature below, I have a few favorite Tesoro models in my Regular-Use Detector Team:

Tesoro: Vaquero, Bandido II µMAX, 'original' Bandido, Silver Sabre µMAX and Mojave

Since 1965, my preferred search coil size for most of my detecting has been in the 5" to 7" size because they fit in and around the brush, rocks, building rubble and work between dense trash better than larger-size search coils. One Tesoro brought us the thin-profile 6" Concentric coil, that has been my primary-use fixture on the far end of the rod. I keep a 6" Concentric on my Vaquero, original Bandido, Bandido II microMAX and Silver Sabre microMAX. I used to use a Tesoro-designed Super 7 Inch Troy Custom 7" Concentric coil but sold it off long ago, and I like the 6"/7" size for general duty work and thought the new Precision 7" Concentric on the Mojave would make a great coil on one of my other Tesoro's. I also considered swapping one of those thin 6" Concentrics over to the Mojave to work it n closer to metal structures and such.

So when I got the Mojave in-hand then used it enough to feel comfortable with it's design and performance and that new coil, I started doing some swapping around and comparing all of my coils and models to find a 'best fit' for how the detectors/coils worked and evaluate their in-the-field performance. The primary goal, of course, was to determine how well I liked the new 'Precision' 7" Concentric coil, then determine which of all my Tesoro's it worked well on and would most likely provide me the best complement afield.

Well, after a lot of coil swapping and hunting in both Coin Hunting urban places and a couple if old Relic Hunting type sites, I reached the conclusion that the best detector to mate the new 7" coil to was .... the Mojave! So my Tesoro outfit has that standard 7" Concentric coil on the Mojave and all the others sport a 6" Concentric coil. I do have a white 8" Concentric on a spare lower rod to swap over on any of my 'regular' Tesoro models, and the newer 8X11 DD RSD coil for my Vaquero. All the detectors work well, the coils work well, and so far as the Mojave/7" Precision coil are concerned, they also work great and are a very welcome addition to the Tesoro model line-up.

Well, that's about all I can share with you based on results be me, my types of hunt sites, and my coil preferences. You might want to do a bit of coil swapping yourself to decide what you like best.

Ran the brown 8 donut coil this weekend and found a record amount of coins on edge! All found at typical school yard depth 4-6 inches in my area(s). The swing feels more natural and precise to me with the 8. Had a blast :)

Received my Cleansweep friday and took it out to the same school yard where I tested the brown 8 donut on the mojave last weekend.
It worked absolutely perfect. Got same school yard depth 4-6 inches, like the donut. Really easy pinpointing, no challenges, and the cleansweep is well balanced on the mojave, no problems or fatigue swingin'.
The only difference I did notice is that several Zincolns didnt break up until almost max disc, unlike the 3 o clock break up with the stock 7 and 8 donut.
Im really happy with the results on the non-stock coils.

I've had great success with the Cleansweep on my Mojave...it's the best coil I have for parks and athletic fields right now.
The Cleansweep coil averages 5" to 6" in depth in my dirt...my last time out I picked up just over $24.00 in clad.
Also ran the 5.75" coil ..averaged a depth of 5" to 6" nice tight coil on the Mojave...great separation.
Used the 8" coil yesterday....it's my favorite coil on this machine...get about 6" to 7" in depth on a nickel.... it sure hits hard on nickels for some reason?
The 7"coil works ok... thought I had a problem with it at first, but think I was just trying to run the Mojave to hot.
But prefer the 8" overall...the Mojave seems to run quiet between 3 and 4.5 on sensitivity settings...if I run it much past 5 it starts to chatter or false a bit.
Now that may change if I was in a area away from power lines....well will see.
Over all I think its a great little detector...

Yep same here on the sweep and donut. Donut also my favorite picking edge coins. Similar results like yours with the 7, I have to turn sens down to 6-7. Not sure if its just incidental that i picked a lot of edge coins with the donut, not so many edge coins with the sweep but same depth as donut. I have a 5.75 in storage, I think Ill give that a try too since you mentioned it. Thanks for the info! Happy Hunting!~

Carlos,

Yes I forgot to mention I have had a similar experience with Canadian clad on edge...the 8" donut seems to hit a lot harder within 4" to 6".
I set the disc on the N in iron...and use a dime on edge to setup the disc.
