mods for hard of hearing persons needed , can we come up with an idea ?

I found this in the forums yesterday , it is from "Eriks Audio World" forum . we have ppl in the hobby that cant hear some of the tones that the detectors emit .

this is the original post http://www.findmall.com/read.php?67,969599 http://www.findmall.com/read.php?67,969599

i dont know if it would be better suited in the mods section , but if we can help the few that would really make it better for them . I know i posted a really crazy idea on the last post , but i was trying to think of something to use . maybe if enough of us try to come up with something , even as crazy as my idea (if it would even work) than we just might be able to build something and market it .

thanks for your time in reading this and looking at the other post , please give it some thought before we say it cant be done / made .

Donnie

I am deaf- have around 7% hearing from my Ordnance in Marine Corps, for detecting I remove hearing aids, and use Killer B headphones, they are loud enough that I can hear all sounds well- Is the most practical and logical way to overcome this disability, they are readily available, and most can be bought for around $100.00 or so, can just use them on any detector :garrett:

i want to thank you for your service to the country .

one of the problems mentioned in that earlier post was hearing constant buzzing / hissing / water rushing sounds . Even though the Killer Beez are loud enough , will it over come those noises or beat out those sounds ?

also thanks for the input . others might enjoy them , they seem reasonable enough , and i have heard they are pretty good cans too .

We have several deaf members in our club http://swmss.org/ and this topic has been discussed several times. One of the deaf members incorporated an l.e.d. into his headphones to flash when ever they made a sound. There were several problems, no discrimination was available, it was a dig everything situation. The other problem was that the wire inside the the headphone had to be comprimised to attach the l.e.d.
which could put any existing warranty in jeopardy.

I know for a fact that a member is working with an electrical engineer to design a multi colored l.e.d. setup that will clip onto a hat brim and and flash when a target is detected. On this particuliar detector there are 3 tones low, mid & high.and a different colored light will correspond with each of those tones.
It doesn't have to be wired directly into the detector so there shouldn't be any warranty problems.
A working proto type is just about to be released. It is currently designed for one particuliar machine, but the engineer is 100% confident that it can be adapted to any machine once all the wrinkles have been ironed out.

If anyone is interested I would be glad to keep you updated as this project moves forward.

Steve :)

Please do keep us informed . That would be sweet to see working , and the L.E.D. light , i saw a stealth led mod on you tube while i was looking into this . it just plugged int the headphone output in any detector .

Wow! Think how many lights you would need for a Musical Etrac ..........NGE

how about a vibrating buzzer like on cellphones
the deeper or smaller the target the less of vibration and duration.....

Here is what I did. Our friend on the forumm---occupant--was telling in great detail about Koss headphones(pro1) having a sensitivity rating of 103.after looking into some of the popular models I couldn't find any detail on some and when I did the rating was about 72, not good enough for my ears. I went to wal mart and found some Koss UR 29 at 28.95. I combined this with the f75LTD of Fishers which has an audio pitch control, played with that for a bit until I could hear the low tones just right----Bingo---problem 90% fixed---good enough for now . Will try it on the nuggets when the snow leaves---lol It did make a great difference for me and my hearing problem.

Kellyco sells a device which plugs into any headphone jack and will vibrate when the detector sounds off. I would think you would want to use it on a detector that has a long drawn out audio response like the Sovereign so that you can feel the different traits of the target, and not on some beep and dig machine which puts out a more processed simple beep.

Yes we do! Here's a link. Let me know how it works out for you!

The advice I have is from experience. If your are hard of hearing, If you wear hearing aids, and they are equipped with telecoils, leave your hearing aids in. Turn on the telecoil and use headphones. The magnetic feild in the speaker will link to the telecoil giving you a much better response than headphones alone.
It is also possible on some to remove the speakers. Install 5 turns of wire around the inside of the shell, and secure with epoxy. The coils must have a resitor will need to be placed inline to maintain an 8 ohm impedance. When wearing this device be sure to turn on the telecoils. . The coils will link to your hearing aids. Its the same type of setup some theaters and some conference centers use to assist hard of hearing ppl to listen to the presentation. Hope this helps...

He makes the Babb scoops and straight rods and knob guards. Really nice guy too, I met him in Florida years ago when he lived there.

You may be able to contact him by email? I am sure he could help?

I'm looking at "in-line" audio equalizers that will plug into the female jack on the detector, and then plug the headphones into the equalizer. I can hear the high end and low end frequencies, but not the mid frequencies. I don't have hearing aids for a variety of reasons - I could get 3 new Excals for what a set of hearing aids tuned to my frequency loss would cost.

So far, I have found some very small equalizers, but they have mini jacks, those won't work with standard 1/4" headphone jacks. I haven't found a jack that goes from mini to 1/4" yet, but I'm pretty sure they are made. I know they make jacks that go from 1/4" down to mini's. I'm most inclined to do something that doesn't require more external attachments or wires on the detector if possible.

I will see if I can find the link to the equalizer that I think would do best for me. Keep in mind, most people lose the low end and high end frequencies - my hearing loss is just the opposite of that. I do use Killer B headphones on the Sovereign GT right now, and those have been best so far that I've been able to find.

I also have thought about finding an equalizer that can be installed either on the inside of the headphones, or even on the ear cup of the headphones. I'm looking into that possibility too. I might be able to use the small equalizer, and put mini jacks on the inside of the headphone, find the settings I need, put it in the ear cup, and leave it set that way. This does use its own battery, so that might be an issue, but can probably be worked around.

Just the ideas I am working on. As for the Excal - well, Beechnut has some good videos on those thoughts - just need the time to do some of those to see if they help me or not. Time and money....
