Modified $39.95 detector nails 16g 14k chain on it's 2nd outing

I bought a 9 function Chinese detector from Harbor freight. After the coupon it was $39.95 . It's for my kids to use. At least that was my excuse. When I tested the thing the unit surprised me with very fast response & good discrimination. It lacks depth but it smokes Montes nail board test in every direction. Even better than my troy X2!...

I had some spare pieces lying around & after deciding the meter was of zero use & the ergonomics sucked so very badly-I was going to chop it up.

This is what I came up with. Very well balanced and easy to swing. The red button is the no motion all metal. It has a disc mode & a tone mode where you can hear the disc'd out metal grunt. But the disc mode shines in heavy iron/nails...And I had just the place to test it out.

A local school soccer/football field. The main tower for the announcers was rebuilt. They spread the concrete/re bar from the old building all around it. This is a very populated field that sees a lot of detectors. But this area makes most detectors unusable.Even my Troy has a hard time seeing it's way through. But this school has given me 4 gold rings-It has potential even in the tough areas due to the large amounts of sports played on these fields.

Knowing how well this unit did in the nail board test I decided to use it in that area...Almost gave up on it after about 2 hours of tabs & building scrap & can slaw. Then I found this beauty!. Marked 14K Italy & I gotta say I am happy I stuck with it....

Also found a small silver ring but that was mid-field with my Troy X2...Gotta use the right tool for the job as they say. And this cheap little sucker shines where more power full units go bonkers.

If it gets your kids off the video games and you off the couch then all is well. Nice finds!

That might get them excited. I get them out once in a while but not often enough. But when they do I wanted a simple beep dig so they could learn the basics. They get free rings from Dad so motivation is somewhat lacking.

I'm going to assume the unit was copied from an older design-wich are known for better iron rejection but lacking in depth compared to modern units. The audio is weak at best but it "talks" just about the same as a Tesoro. If they can learn this unit they can start using my Silver U-max.

I put a screw on the disc knob & can do a quick check for zincs/tabs. I have found it to be pretty much accurate but I'm always gonna dig a small solid signal on a ballfield.Zincs be danged & I just wanted to see how it worked-fine.And it is more than paid for now!

The area also has both entrance gates to the field from the school side.So I knew it had a lot of traffic & a spectator area. I know I've missed some so I may try for more next week. Very tough to hunt even with this unit.

It may be a cheap POS but at this point it works fine. I'm not afraid to hack it or solder a few connections. I may add a 2nd disc for giggles & I have a few old coils lying around...
