Modification to Surfmaster p.i. (the first model)

Daviot

New member
Hello everybody, i'm new in the forum i'm from Spain and i would like to ask you if anybody knows about a modifycation that can be done to the White's Surfmaster P.I. (the first model, not the pro or dual field), to improve it's sensibility to gold items.I've read there is a guy called Bill from EEUU that does it. He wrote in a forum that the Surfmaster cames out the factory betwen 18 to 25 uS and he puts it to 15 uS (I supose he refers to the pulse delay). Does anyone know how to do it?. Thanks for reading.

Daviot,

Someone gave me the information below many years ago. I have not actually done the modification myself. The guy who used to do this is Bill Crabtree from Surfscanner Detectors. Here is the URL for his website page on modifications. http://www.surfscanner.com/Surfscan3/Modifications.html

Change out #Q2= TIP32C with a IRF9640

Replace the 220 ohm resistor with a 490 ohm resistor (1/4 watt)

When finished installing the components cut a piece of aluminum foil 3/4" square.
We will use this to adjust trimmer pot #R25 turning on the unit and adjusting
the threshold so you can just hear it, adjust R25 for best response when the
3/4" foil is passed by the coil. This should do it.

You can try removing diode #D3=1N4148 and installing a jumper in it's place.
This will allow a little finer adjustment of the threshold on the soft deep ones.

Thanks a lot John for your detailed response. It's just what i was looking for, although it looks a little complicated for me so i would leave it as it is for the moment. Thanks again and good hunting.

thanks

question does increasing pulse width better for more depth?

can we use larger coil for more depth

say i meter square coil?

any idea please

hello Daviot, yes Surf PI has a great potencial for mods... you can find those all on GEOTECH Forum
