Modern technology..

Usually over a years time use several units so usually use the stock coil..Think about it Minelab with its X-terra series allows us to use one with 3 different frequency coils, sort of 3 different units all wrapped into one...Not familiar with patents and the like but feel in the future just may see more companies using this technology also...Certainly new technology at its best...

I agree that VLEX is certainly an interesting concept. Where it goes from here is up to Minelab, I suppose. Other companies have dabbled in "multiple frequency" detectors for some time. For example the DFX can operate at two different frequencies (3 kHz or 15 kHz), or both simultaneously. You can put that same coil on an MXT or the M6 and operate at 14 kHz. Even the Minelab Eureka utilizes one coil for operating at 6.4 kHz, 20 kHz or 60 kHz. I'm not a design engineer. But it seems to me that having one coil specifically tuned (via microprocessor) to both the detector and one given frequency would be less compromising that having a coil that covers a spectrum of frequencies. Thanks to VFLEX, the X-Terra does just that. HH Randy

Yes it is a great advantage, but the downfall of V-Flex is that no aftermarket coils can be made. To give us a round 15" WOT DD or large SEF or 10.5"--6" 3kHz LF DD, etc. which I want. It is a disadvantage because I do love the aftermarket coil sizes from CoilTek and NuggetFinder which I now own for my GP detector that Minelab cannot offer offer or even come close to touch on.
