modding an old silver saber

I am interested in buying an old Tesoro silver sabre detector from my neighbor. I know you can easily mod this machine for and extra 2 inches or so, but i am not sure how to do this. My friends father used to have one that was pretty good. He had it modded in Europe somewhere for $25 back in the early 90s. Does it matter if it is an original silver sabre or does it have to be the silver sabre II? Any info would be helpful.
