Modded Cibola vs Cutlass II?

Hey guys,

I have a Whites MXT that is usually my primary unit. I mostly do old home sites, church sites, and ghost towns, with an occasional tot lot for practice. I recently purchased a Cutlass II for tot lots and a back-up on different sites. I also think the Cutlass will make me a better rounded detectorist by learning the tones and not relying on the VDI so much. My question is this. I can pic up a MGB modded Cibola for a decent price. I was thinking this could be a good detector for "deep" areas on old sites, etc. Is there much difference between the depth on the modded Cibola vs Cutlass II or MXT? Would it be a waste of money? What would you guys do? I'll purchase the Cibola or not purchase based on your recommendations and suggestions. What would you guys do???? Pro's vs Cons!!!! Thanks

Having a Cibola with a GB modification would be like having a Vaquero, so in that regard its a good thing. But the modification done to it voids the warranty and if you ever have to have it serviced, Tesoro will not honor the warranty. It may be money down the drain if it fails unless you know someone that might be able to repair it for you.

Mod'd Cibola is not the same as the V. The Mod'd Cibola runs much smoother and gets better depth from what I have seen.
I loved my mod'd C with the 5.75" coil, also had a MXT with the 4x6 DD coil. If I had to make a choice, would take the MXT,
more versatile and has a meter that's pretty accurate. Depth wise, similar in moderatly and highly mineralized grounds.
The MXT sucks because it's heavier and doesn't balance as well as the C and I don't like the tones. Also, my elbow takes
beating with the MXT and I can hunt all day with the C.

I never owned the Cutlass but, from what I have read depth capabilites are similar to the Silver Sabre uMax. If you like the
multiple tones you probably want to stay away from the Cibola.

Keep the MXT and try the DD coils for it. You'll be suprised how close you can get to the metal posts of swing sets etc that you
find at tot lots. I did not like the stock MXT coil, too much noise and falsing, drove me nuts.

I doubt the modified C will be any deeper, if as deep as your MXT comparing similar sized coils. I agree with your thinking as to getting experience with the beep and dig machine over the tid machine. I hunted for years with just beep and dig plus discrimination and I believe that experience has added an extra dimension to the way I use the MXT. I'm listening more than watching the display. The C will be lighter and nicer to swing and with a bit of practice you can learn to be fairly accurate on the ID of targets by turning the Disc knob up and down. I'm also a believer in it takes quite a few detectors to be too many - so if the price is right I'd probably end up buying it and possibly reselling it if it didn't suit me. My two bits.

Just tried the Tesoro site to look at the Cutlass II manual to refresh my memory and wasn't getting there at the moment.

If memory serves ... it should be possible to mod the Cutlass and bring the ground balance to the front panel just as one would with the Cibola.

May give just a little depth away when compared to a modded Cibola, but may also have cleaner iron rejection. And the coils are less expensive for the Cutlass. Still the potential warranty issue.
My two bits.

a smaller-than-stock coil for the more versatile MXT.

You didn't mention what coil selection you have for your MXT, or if you have only the stock coil with the Cutlass II. I take it you have the Cutlass II and not the Cutlass II

Monte, is that some kind of new math?? 200 miles round trip @20mpg actually equals 10 gallons of fuel @$2.65 per gallon = $26.50. 3 trips would be a total cost of $79.50 in fuel.

I didn't proof-read my message that well I guess as I typed:

If you hit a ghost town that's 100 miles away, one way, and your rig only gets 20 mpg, that's 20 gal. for a round trip. Gas around here is about $2.65 today so that would be three round-trips for $153

I hit a '1' instead of a '2' as it should have been 200 miles (I was thinking of the closes old town site to me that I plan to hit again this spring) and that would total to 400 RT, thus 20 gal. @ 20 mpg. results in a cost of $153.

So, I just didn't catch where I hit a wrong key. Nonetheless, it was to convey the fact that, perhaps, the $$$ could be better spent that to get a detector that might not do all that much.

Thanks for the heads-up.

Monte
