MIT medallion

I recently started detecting and the first place I searched was my in-laws yard. They have about forty acres of farm land in Somerset County Maryland that was once part of larger plantation. I caught a strong signal I read as a coin. Started digging and popped out this medallion. It has the MIT seal on the front with Twenty fifth anniversary '86 engraved on the back. It looks like there was a piece on top that was broken off, maybe a small loop for a way to wear it, I'm not sure. Has anyone seen or heard of these before? Thanks.

No, sure haven't but sounds to be a good find! Doing the research out to be interesting. Keep swinging and digging.

Never found anything like that, but I would bet the farm that it was made in 1985 or 1986 to be passed out at the anniversary ceremony or whatever...

Here are the photos of the medallion. I know MIT was founded in 1861 so the twenty fifth anniversary would have been in 1886.
