Missed Targets

I kinda hate to even admit this, but it seems I am missing targets. God I miss my Sunray. I went last Sunday to an old Church that I hunted two weeks ago. Instead of using my stock Coil, I used my Coiltek 5X10. I had just got started and the first Signal I got was a Really good one. I bent over to start cutting a plug and the whole area came up. It seemed that I was in an old plug. I had done an excellent job two weeks ago covering my hole so I did not even notice it was an old plug. When I hit it, it flipped and there was a 1941 Silver Quarter. Had I not seen it, I would have thought I had previously found a can and passed on.

I was cross checking an area with my Coiltek, when I came to an old plug. I got a solid 12-44 there and remembered that I got the end of an old Spoon out of that hole. I knew that I was getting a solid Wheat Penny signal so I dug the plug out again and found the Handle of the spoon. I covered the plug and started to move on. Out of habit I checked the hole and the 12-44 was still there. I dug it out again and finally fould a Wheat penny.

I moved on and hit a 12-32. Knowing this was a Zinc or trash, I almost kept walking. I decided to dig it and found can slaw. I covered my hole and swung my coil over it before I walked off and got a 12-45. This signal was so clear. I dug down and found a clad dime.

I know this Coiltek is not as deep as the Stock Coil but the ID is amazing. Anybody know if the 8X12 Coiltek is this good?

I have the SEF 6x8, 5 inch sunray, Nel Sharpshooter, stock 11, and Nel Tornado. I noticed something after using all these coils before I used the Sharpshooter. When i used the sharpshooter I mssed 2 wheats and a silver spoon end. They were ringing up hard. I cannot understand how I missed them. But, the sharpshooter is a tool that you might want in your toolbox. I have been using the e-trac for over a year and think I am starting to know a little what I am talking about.

Sorry but I missed your point here.

I am really happy with the Coiltek. Even thinking about getting the larger 12X8

Then Tornado would be my pick. It has found me an 1853 half dime at 8 inches. Also, a 1822 half dollar at 9 inches.

Found these today after hunting the site thoroughly with my stock coil. Not saying the Coiltek 10X5 is as deep because it isn't but it does ID better. I think the Tornado is good but it is too big for trashy spots, as is the Stock Coil as well. I have always liked an Elliptical shape for a Coil. Of course I found quite a bit of Clad but I did find several 50s Nickles.

1952 Silver Dime
1941 Silver Quarter
1945 Wheat
1949D Wheat
1952D Wheat
1912 Wheat
1953D Wheat

Daddyflea, when you say you miss your " sunray "are you refering to the sunray probe or a coil by sunray? Because Sunray makes very good products !!!

Sunray x-1 and x-5 coil is a must have for the etrac

Amen brother! I've only used Detech,Sunray,Minelab and Whites coils. To be honest, the Sunrays are the "sharpest" of what I've used,meaning....the signal heard in the headphones is exact, not mushy or drawn out. I believe it's simply designed with a tighter field than some. However,I have NOT used Coiltek coils yet.

That's a nice hunt DF! Two silvers in one hunt with some wheats...Id take that any day! Let's see what else you can pry out of that place!

I was actually talking about the Sunray Probe. I miss not being able to Pin Point in Discrimination mode. Saying that I am going right now and put a Magnet in my Finds Bag. Seems like every hole has a bunch of Nails in it.

One reason I found so many Coins with the Coiltak was directly due to a concrete barrier for a Driveway. Running the Stock coil I thought the barrier had Rebar in it. I had to stay away from it with the Stock Coil. In reality there was a Coin every few inches and the small Coiltek was able to separate them enough for me to know it was not rebar.

I must say [ because I have the x1 on my Etrac } That with the X1 probe IMO, makes the Etrac the ultimite machine !!!!! They are still around as used but sell for a high dollar price. Best of luck.

DF, were you double checking your holes before replacing the plug the first time around?

I certainly thought I was but in reality there is so many Cans and Can slaw, I most likely thought the target was trash and moved on. I often will not dig out every little piece of iron or can slaw before leaving a plug. The small coil separates them enough to get better ID. Some of these are on end as well. There is one site where I get multiple pieces of Wire and Nails in almost every plug.

Save yourself some money and back aches and get a NEL Hunter coil.

I hunted a place today using my Stock 11" inch coil. Prior to this hunt I went over this place with the Coiltek 5X10. I found two Wheat Pennies and neither was very deep. Both were real close to each other. No reason I should not have found them with the 5X10 unless my coil just never got over them. End result was the 5X10 did a really good job. I got a bunch of coins from this place and most of them were old.

One of my goals this year is to go to a few sites that have been my best producers and actually GRID. Gridding EVERYTHING EVERYWHERE kinda takes the spontaneous fun out of things but I'll grid to find an 1800s silver...for sure! There have been many times the same has happened to me that happened to you...thought I had it picked completely and I didn't. My own VERY small yard (mobile home yard). I had cleaned it out with my IDX and 3 coils and Explorer with 3 coils. Then, last summer,I came up with 12-15 more coins, all modern, all shallow. Why? Close trash was almost always the answer. It does seem there's always something more to find,no matter what! Makes a guy wonder just how many freaking coins ARE in the ground...

I pounded a yard over 12 times. I found at 6 silvers. the last time I found 3 more silvers. Never know when another coin or coils will pop up.

I always Grid. Only time I don't is when the grass is too high or something prevents me from doing it.

Hey Kevin,

I've done the same with our yard, 1902 house on corner lot. Lots of Indian heads, barbers, Buffalos and newer. I should go look at my records and see if I was reasonably astute, probably not. But like you every new detector, new coil, and even with the same detector can yield new finds. And target masking is the issue. Even gridding doesn't get them all, because many coins might only give a signal at 46.3 degrees and none from any other direction, or none at all. I believe we are missing more targets than we find.

Hope some day to do a dig and sift of an area that I've hit with every detector and coil that I own, see what is left. Last year I dug up some shrubs on either side of the front entry where I was residing. Of course I took a detector and was rewarded with a very nice IH. But being right next to the house nail city. Think I will give it a try with my old Compass before digging and screening everything.

Chris
