MIRAGE P,I & THE 10" MONO COIL WORKING A OUTFEILD

Well-known member
Today I finally tried out the 10" mono coil on the mirage P,I using Sven,s setting he gave me , of 10 gain 3.5sat , 1---2 frequency and two ticks per second, this is a deep setting and can hit my worst gold ring @ 9"and the good rings at 10" + I would like to try this thing out on a beach because it would not hit those boby pins past 3" deep and common nails past 6"deep this machine gives its hottest signals on gold & aluminum , I would say its not a coin finder but with this setting I can hit a quarter @ 6" but it really smokes on the gold - I have heard some saying they hit boby pins down a foot well not this machine get past 3" and most are silent so this would be an interesting machine for finding gold rings on a beach the last part of the video I tried to show this attribute.

the speaker is from my old killer be headphones, i for them apart and plugged it into the headphone jack used one speaker and a coat hanger I am not a real electronics expert at all of course on an ocean beach you could not hear this over the waves, but most of my spots are quite

yep that pull tab could of been a nice gold ring! An amazing machine for sure. Thanks for another fine video production.

Since the Mirage was designed for headphone use, external speaker was not of great importance. So volume is not that great when using the small internal piezo speaker. same as found in a desktop computer that makes the beeps.
Also due to lack of room in the build, laptop computer size speakers just didn't produce enough volume. The small piezo gives just enough audio for a quick demo or to verify
the Mirage is working.

Gunnar doesn't wear headphones, I am going to build him an external speaker in a box. Since he is using it in places that need a higher volume, I revised my plan last night on the external speaker. I am going to add a small 9 volt battery powered amplifier with a volume control into the box. He might get complaints from people down the street if he cranks it up..LOL

Gunnar is doing an excellent job learning how to use the PI and the new tricks it can do. I also say it takes about 50 digging hours before things start to click..................does have a learning curve.

The more he uses it, he'll start to see his finds coming from deeper depths.

sven you have been a blessing , that external speaker will be a big improvement over the fang dangled thing I made, I liked your setting , on the mirage today , keep in mind i had the coil a good 3" off the ground because of the grass, after it gets mowed, I want to take the 10" coil back with those same settings . I probably was swinging a bit to fast as well slower is better , deeper but most of the targets are in the 1st 5" as this ball park was built in the late 70,s from a farm field ,

Nice video kaolinwasher! The 10" finds things deeper than I care to dig, ignores most small foil and hits hard on the gold and platinum!

Sven, I've been wondering...what are the pulse width and pulses per second (pps) specifications for the Mirage?

thanks and Happy Hunting!

Gunnar, thats a good video of the larger coil on the Mirage, must admit i have a reasonable amount of large coils on my Pulse which is similar in design as the one Sven produces, infact he built me smashing little 5'' Mono coil for my detector and have only just started seeing its full potential.I use the large coils over here in the UK mainly for deep work as in my mind a PI machine is the only real tool for the job,but saying that i do have a prime roman villa site that i have access too but the only down side of this site is the ground is so highly mineralized its like detecting on the wet sand but its 70 miles inland.

So this is the reason i use a Pulse for depth as well as difficult ground conditions, but earlier in the year i thought about my roman villa site and most of the time we only have access to this site when the crops come off,so then the other problem being the thick corn stubble that you just cannot use a large coil on,hence the reason of using a Pulse with a small 5'' coil.

Sven, mentioned about 50 hours of using a PI machine just to get the basic's,this i agree with but once you start getting use to what they can or cannot do then they are pretty amazing machines too use.

Due to the learning curve involved most people i feel pack up using such a machine just before the home straight and never see the full potential of using one, usually the comment used to sell the machine is 'they have no discrimination' so cannot use one.I will admit i had my doubts but by asking for advice, help, tips etc on how to get the best from these machine i am really starting to enjoy using them and gradually get the hours on the clock.

Great video and review on the Mirage PI and larger coil.

Pulse Delay 10us-90us
Pulse width 12us
Frequency 1000hz
SAT .5 to 10 sec
Gain 5:1

Since the Mirage is more a dedicated small gold jewelry hunting machine at 12us pulse width it does not get extreme depth on silver, copper clad items.
With a mod just completed, the Mirage is a bit more versatile. I can change pulse width from 12 to 30us that increases depth on silver, copper clad items 1- 2 1/2".
Switching to 30us loses very tiny gold items retains depth on thin gold rings and some depth increases it on larger gold rings. This sort of makes it a better all purpose machine.
The circuit design can handle a pulse width of 50us, going to see what happens on the next build with a three position selector switch. I still like most of my hunting done at 12us pulse width with a pulse delay at just above min on the external control. rather find the gold than other metals and trash.

If I remember right most of the PI's that are good relic and coin , deep cache (hoard) machines run a pulse width at 50-100us for extreme depth on larger gold, silver, copper, clad, other metals and iron relics.

thanks for the info Sven! I was just wondering after reading all the different pulse widths for various beach machines. from the best I can recall:

Goldquest SS: 30uS
Headhunter PI: 30uS - 150uS
White's Surfmaster: 50uS
Sea Hunter MKII: 70uS
GoldScan 5: 50uS - 100uS (toggle switch I think)
Deepstar: 100uS

Going back through the old PI tech forum and reading Eric Foster's old posts talking about design parameters of his various machines is pretty intriguing!

thanks again Sven!

Sven, are you planning on making anymore of your PI machines ??? as i am very interested in one.
