CALIFORNIA
Stephen Album, Catalog of California Trade Tokens, 3 Vol. 1970-75
Charles V. Kappen, California Tokens, 1976 (broader than Album).

From 1866 to about 1900 is the Saloon Token Era. Now saloon tokens are known from the Civil War, and after 1900, but hundreds and hundreds of varieties were issued beginning about 1875, primarily in the Southwest. These tokens have denominations such as 1 drink, 12 1/2 cents, 6 1/4 cents, or "a smile" (a small whiskey). They are highly sought after and many command three-figure prices, especially those with pictorial designs, ghost town tokens, and territorial issues (from Arizona Territory, Montana Territory, etc.).

Howdy, I collect Tokens from my local Area, and I'm always checking out Saloons on E-bay. I've never seen a Saloon from Fowler, though that doesn't mean they don't exist or that it particularly rare. All Saloons are Pre-prohibition, so 1920 or older some towns went dry a few years earlier usually from pressure from the Suffragettes. the Moise K Co. Struck tokens out of San Francisco and there usually Early turn of the century and older. If you want to know what it's worth, and cut out the middle man list it on E-bay, if shes a tough one you'll get a good price. Even though yours is a bit rough that's not all that important to a collector unless the item is fairly common. Nice token with that Classic Western name MINT SALOON! My hometown of Everett Washington has 5 know Saloon Tokens one of them is the A.Nydin MINT SALOON, I've never even seen one! I'd pay big for one! get a hold of Duane Feisel He recently wrote a book on California Saloons His E-mail is Collector@toast2.net Just E-mail him with the description and he'll tell you if it's a good one. Tell him a Fellow member of NTCA sent you.
