A tired and hungry Easterner walks into a seedy eat'n joint
while passing thru town on his way to the goldfields. After
spending most of his grubstake traveling this far, he sits
down at the counter and looks over the high priced menu.
Knowing he didn't have much money, he looks around and
notices a grizzled old prospector with his arms folded staring
blankly at a full bowl of chili. After fifteen minutes of
just sitting there staring at it, the Easterner bravely asks the
old sourdough, "If you ain't gonna eat that, mind if I do?"
The old prospector slowly turns his head toward the Eastener
and says, "Nah, go ahead."
Eagerly, the Easterner reaches over and slides the bowl over
to his place and hungerly starts spooning it in with delight
and thinking how lucky he was. He gets nearly down to the
bottom and notices a dead mouse in the chili. The sight was
shocking and he immediately throws up the chili into the
bowl.
The old prospector quietly says, "Yep, that's about as far as I
got, too."
