Over the course of our two weeks + a couple of days up in Minnesota, I managed to dig up dozens of items. I was pleased as I've hunted much of the old fairgrounds now for many years as well as the resort we stay at. For the past several years we've been going to the resort in early June and then the Last two weeks of Aug through Labor day.
At any rate, the resort, beach and in the water, was very frugal this trip. Oh, numerous sinkers and trash items were dug, along with the 57 (?) Plymouth toy car, a flag pin, a Lions International pin, junk ring and many bullets and brass casings. The n/d Buffalo nickel and a wheat came from the water as well as a few pieces of clad and cents.
The old fairgrounds site, which includes a tractor pull and a horse riding area, yielded all the silver and wheat cents, save for 1 wheat. And, most of the clad. Got 39 quarters and a little over a roll of dimes, plus a few nickels, a pile of cents and several fair tokens.
3 of the silver dimes came out of the fairgrounds stretches behind the restrooms and a fair building, and the rest near the horse riding area and a old farm road that runs the width of the site along the back. All in all, I recovered 15 silver coins. 11 Mercury dimes, 2 Rosies, 1 1897 Barber dime and the 1952 Franklin half. Some of you might recall I got a 57 Franklin half on the spring trip that was nestled down between some roots and I thus gave it a nice kiss. The 52 this trip was in some very hard ground along a well trodden farm road and as a result, I gave it a kiss also. No kidding, though, it was pin pointer deep and to get it I had to shave thin layers of dirt. Hence, the kiss. 11 of the silver coins were recovered the first week. The second week a good bit of time was spent with two dogs, youngest son and his girlfriend.
The resort has a par 3 golf course that they closed down three years ago and made it into a soccer and frisbee golf course. The course was built for golf back in the 80's, so has little chance of yielding any silver coins. I occasionally hunt on it for an hour of so a few times each trip in the evenings to try and wear off some dinner. This year I hunted on it one evening and much to my surprise I recovered the 14k gold band from what once was the # 1 green. It locked on a perfect 58 and sounded nice. Just like a good square tab often does. The resort owners know a couple of gold rings had been reported lost, but no longer have any names for further trying to locate someone. There is suppose to be a pretty nice ladies gold diamond ring out there some where as well.
I must admit, it wasn't easy to leave those 60 and 70 temps knowing there were still some things left to find. OH well, maybe some seed for 2015. HH jim tn
