Minimum Disc. versus All metal??

Just wondering, Using the Cortes in discriminate on minimum with sensitivity on max, wouldn't it essentially be silent search All metal?? I tried it today in an area (house lot) that I have searched quite a few times and has always produced good finds in the past (Buffalo nickels, Mercury dimes, wheaties, etc). The ol' search area again coughed up 2 wheaties (1940, 1945) and 2 nickels (1939, 1940) among other assorted clad and pull tabs. I know I have passed the coil over these before, what gives?? more depth from less discrimination or maybe they were on there edge or something? I pretty much hunted today using only audio, without I.D.

Hi dmckee17

I think you answered your own question in the last sentence of your post "I pretty much hunted today using only audio, without I.D." Also you were more tuned in to the posibility of the area, since you had found some good targets in there before. I know that if the area that I am searching is producing the older coins and relics, I am more tolerable to going after the 'iffy' signals which could be a good targets masked by nearby trash. It looks to me that you did OK! To me it is a constant learning process and I am continually learning new techniques at this hobby. I have several Tesoro's and have used a Deleon as an extended loaner for a couple of weeks, but my experience is mostly with the older ED 120 machines, so I don't know about going deeper with minimum Disc.on the newer models. I use min. Disc on my older machines, but that is a point above small surface nails. HH

Yeah I guess you may be right, though I usually hunt with disc. between iron and foil and sensitivity at max. I've never deliberately set the disc. at zero. Set like this it really hit hard and tight on the nickels, and I did dig a couple of large rusted washers, wood screws were iffy sounding but I dug a couple them too. It just really surprised me when I dug the first nickel. I guess ya never stop learning huh?

AM allows the threshold circuitry to work at an audible level. In Disc mode you can crank the threshold up to max without an audible and it is supposed to add increased sensitivity off sorts, something you cannot do in AM. But releasing the disc circuitry in the AM mode, I would think is deeper since it's not using a circuit that has to filter the signal.

I think it also depends on the particular detector. I know several of my Tesoros still discriminate small iron with the disc set to "0". If I'm not mistaken this is where the circuit design acceptance range would also play a part. Maybe one of the more technical people will jump in on this.

No, not quite. While the Cort

I agree with Monte - audio first, display second.

Thanks for the replies guys, good info. Another technique in the arsenal. Also Monte, Is Hightone is describing "supertuning" that I've read about in Tesoro literature somewhere? and can the Cortes do this?

with most (not all) Tesoro models. I will tell you the Cort
