miners moss:

New member
I have a sluice which came with Nomad (miners moss). Is there anything that will work better than miner's moss or is there a certain type that works better than others? It will be needed strictly for flour gold. Thanks, Mtnmn

I used miners moss (this was back in the :80"s) but I found that a good graed of carpet would work better, For me, anyway.

Since starting this post, I think I have come up with a better solution than the very loosely woven miners moss that my sluice came with. Have already replaced the nomad with plastic scrubber pads, suspect it is the same thing as what James has mentioned using. It's weave is so close that I think it will keep much of the sand out and most of the very small flour gold in, unlike the loosely woven miner's moss. In regards to the carpeting mentioned by bubber, did read about a prospector who preferred using indoor/outdoor carpeting in his sluice in place of miner's moss. Thanks guys...

Have added what I hope will be another improvement to the scrubbing pads. Have installed the kind of wire mesh that comes with 1/4 inch squares ( the type they used to put on rabbit pens years ago ) over the plastic scouring pads with the raised wires on the squares running in parallel to the raised ripples already on the sluice. Hopefully the raised wires will act like miniature ripples helping drive the flour gold down into the pads that much better. Expanded metal might have worked better, but already had the wire mesh and plastic scouring pads on hand.
