Mineralization and DD coils.

Question for the experts. Thinking of picking up a 7.5khz dd for my 505, but I'm not sure if its beneficial. I've heard they are better in high mineralization situations over the stock coil, but normally my GB is between 8-11 almost always. My thinking is the soil here in northern Ohio has low mineralization and the stock coil is the way to go. I should add that I do have a 6" dd 18khz that doesn't see much use because I find more with the 9" concentric. Hind sight being 20/20, I wish I went with the 10" dd in the first place.
If anyone has an opinion on the subject, I'd like to hear it.

IMO, the 10.5" 7.5kHz coil should be the stock coil. With GB numbers as low as you find, a DD should be a distinct advantage.

Lower GB numbers means higher mineralization. Go a DD :)

Hmmm...often wondered about that. If thats the case I would benefit for sure. Longhair knows what he's talking about too, so with that, its time to give one a shot.
Thanks.

With a 505, if you typically see GB numbers below 15 a DD coil is beneficial.

Thanks for that info. I always figured the lower the number the less minerals. I've looked for that specific info too and never really found a definitive answer. Quess I should have asked four years ago. Thanks again. Still much to learn.

I can't emphasize enough how much useful information can be found in Randy Horton's FREE e-book "Understanding Your X-Terra". He explains in plain English how everything works.....and did I mention that it's FREE!
Just go to the FAQFAQ pinned thread in this forum and you'll find the link(s) to it and more info than your (or my) brain can absorb.

I printed Randys book long ago, and I know he explains "how" to GB the extera, but I dont think he got into "what" the numbers mean in relation to how much mineralization is present. I'll have to look again.

This should help.

With the 705 i have found it to be the best coil for me, i have mineralized soil running under 10 in some areas. It has been said that you loose depth but i could not see hardly any difference with dimes coming in as deep as 10 inches. The area and type of soil will make a difference so i would say a DD is a must.

Technically, the ground phase numbers don't indicate how mineralized the ground is. They do, however, provide an indication of the type of ground.......magnetic, conductive, or a combination of the two. BarnacleBill made a post regarding how we can determine what our mineralization levels are, if you have an X-70 (or 705). You can find this particular "discussion" in the FAQFAQ section. Here is the link to that post. http://www.findmall.com/read.php?55,574329,574329#msg-574329

Here's a link to more of what Randy has written on the subject over the years.

Thanks for the help and good info. Sounds like I'll been missing out on the full potential of the 505. Wife needed ideas for my birthday next month, so I gave her this one....
