Minelabs' service dept SUCKS

Water hunter sounds like a disconnect some place. I don't know any of the first guys you mentioned but I know Gary Schafer (Vice President Minelab America) personally and he is an outstanding man. I have never heard an unkind word said about him .He and Minelab have done more for this hobby in the last three years that every other detector company combined. I think you should wait a few days and re connect with Minelab and just see what's up! I have had minor issues with Minelab's service in the past but nothing like mention in your post. It aways seems to worked out.
Cooler minds prevail!

He may be one of the nicest guys around, but his answer to me was if that's what they quoted you than that's what it is. If you would like to see the letter he sent me, just say the word and I'll e-mail it to you. The company went to the dogs, they just got to big for there own good. Remember your company is only as good as your service.

I had to do a little checking.... I didn't realize Codan bought Minelab. Thanks for the info

Minelab specializes in advanced electronic technologies including detection equipment for military and humanitarian de-mining projects. They also produce metal detectors for the consumer market. The company has manufacturing, distribution and customer service operations in Adelaide (Australia), Cork (Ireland) and Las Vegas (USA), and is an ISO 9001:2000 Quality Endorsed Company. Minelab was established in 1985 and was acquired by Codan in March, 2008.

So to make a long story short I contacted the general manager his name is Shafer, The guy cared less, then I found the company that owns Minelab it

I,would probably pickup a used GT and part the Elite out.If your Elite has a stock Tornado coil a -90.00 rod asm -100.00 Elite control box as is -90.00 alkaline pack -35.00 with these numbers added up 315.00 minus off a used GT at 600.00 money out of your pocket $275.00.Even with a used GT it will be newer than your Elite.I would not have a main board fitted at that cost.On the other hand if you can find a good price on an Elite you would have extra parts.Good Luck Ron

Thanks Ron , I have the complete Sovereign. 10" coil rod rechargeable battery pack, charger, 180 meter, 15" watt coil, and the older horse shoe coil. Isn't it a shame that I have to go threw this all because Minelab has that take it or leave it attitude. Wait until you see what I have to say on you tube.

They make some great detectors but the prices for parts are crazy. Ron is right, sell the parts you have and get a GT. And used parts are becoming hard to find so you should be able to recop some of the cost for a newer machine..Good Luck...

Older Sovereigns are getting harder to find. I have two and hope they last. Replacing the board is not that uncommon. They do it with most of the electrical equipment these days. Replace the main board or throw the unit in the trash. We don't even have TV repair shops anymore. Trash it and get a new one. Send a Pro pointer into Garret and you will get a new one. Troubleshooting boards is a thing of the past.

Lots of good advice posted above. Detectors only have a usefulness of a certain time! The original Sovereign was introduced in 1991 and the Elite in 2003. In the world of electronics that's a long time ago. Most of the parts in these older analog (for the most part) these machines are just old technology.I really understand how we love the machine that we have had our best finds or know how to tweak the best depth out of. I buy a second one to have a back up just in case. I used a Fischer 1280x for 16 years while technology past me buy.... when I took the plunge to a Minelab Excalibur many years after they came to market, I realized I have probably walked over 50k in gold the last 10 years! That machine paid for itself in 1 month and than bought me a GT with the extra finds. The GT paid for itself in two weeks. No machine ever owed me anything.
I want my machine to pay for its self in a year and provide me fun for a few years, after that everything else is a free ride.
Hoping your able to fix your machine with parts from others and you can continue to enjoy hunting.
