Minelab's new manufacturing location . . . . . interesting insight into the decision

Well, it looks like the posts on Minelab's pending move of their manufacturing facility from Ireland to Malaysia was confirmed by the president of the company in a letter to their dealers and will be followed up by a release outside that network.

They will be using the sevrices of Plexus (Company locations) and the Malasyian facility. The transition will take place thru the end of 2009 at which time Irelab will be out of the manufacturing business. The announcement says it is being done since Codan - Minelab's parent company - already uses the Malaysian gruop for their products.

An interesting statement is "I also wish to note that the decision is no reflection on the quality of the staff of operation in Ireland and is wholly about lowering costs within the Codan group of companies." Anyone want to venture a guess as to if this means the cost savings will be passed on the end users?

There have been some interesting announcements of late regarding Minelab's new direction in areas such as customer support, service, production and dealer support . . . . . will be interesting to interesting to see where this takes them over the next year or two . . . . . cutting costs in the wrong area in the high end market they reside in can work in more than one direction . . . . . several companies including names such as the original Teknetics, Gold Mountain and others had great detectors . . . . it was the rest of the operation that adversely impacted them . . . .

cutting costs.. they don't realize soon there will be no one with a job or any money to buy anything in the rest of the world.. its happening much more here in the US than anywhere else... Maybe Obammy will save us

This is exactly what happened to Alpine car stereo products in the early to mid 90s (?). Before being purchased by a conglomerate, Alpine produced some of the best car stereo around. Since being bought out, the Alpine name and quality has gone down the tubes. Minelab to follow? Only time will tell. Johnny

Government control is forcing companies overseas to third world countries, we'll soon join them in that status.

If they're using Plexus to build their boards now, nothing much should change from the perspective of quality.
Plexus is a BIG contract manufacturing firm, (not the biggest, but good sized, over $1B/year). They're well versed in building circuit boards that are a whole lot more complex than anything that goes in a metal detector.

Of course it's going to asia for labor cost purposes, like just about anything else in electronics manufacturing.

Yeah, lowering costs, heard that before. Of course, the price won't be lowered....

This is pretty much the last straw with these clowns for me. Anyone want to buy an E-Trac or an Explorer SE with a ton of accessories? Shoot me an email and let's talk. Screw Minelab. There is competition and 90% of it is cheaper, since saving money is the goal.....seriously, I have an E-Trac and Explorer SE Pro with 4 rechargables each, the Sunray probe on each, Jeff Herke's arm cuff on each and a rain protector as well, with the stock Pro coils as well as 12x10 SEF coils, and a ton of other stuff (coils, bags, etc) I will sell if anyone is interested. I think I've had enough of these guys I'm ready to move on. Andy's book for each one too. If you want to buy, send me a PM let's chat. I won't give it away, but I will sell it for a reasonable price. Enough said. I'm totally dead serious. PM me and I will list exactly what I have and what I'm looking for.

Save that Minelab. I'm gonna save money by going to your competition, your made in USA competition. Good riddance to ya mateys. Maybe that was a good idea after all.

Obama is the problem ????
I thought Bush was the problem.

So Obama is responsible for a company in Ireland moving to Malaysia and costing American jobs ? ... ...

All I can say is I have no regrets. Since getting the E-Trac, my good finds have gone way up, searching in places I've already searched with other machines, and that others have searched as well. The E-Trac is the real deal. The Explorer is also a great machine, but I have both, and when I go out the Explorer sits at home and the E-Trac goes and most of the time finds great stuff. Just today I dug my first Large Cent with it, from 1847, that someone shot with a rifle. I live in Southern Wisconsin so obviously you aren't going to find too many Large Cents around here, but the E-Trac sniffed it out.

Just my 2 cents. Your milage may vary as they say. If you are comfortable with your Explorer and getting good finds with it, you don't have to get an E-Trac, but I don't have any regrets.

Doesn't surprise me a bit. What would surprise me is if they pass the savings on to consumers. I will probably keep what I've got but no way would I buy a new one for the $1500 price-tag. There's been a constant direction toward bigger and bigger profit since the company sold. This is just another step in the process. Maybe someone in the US will come up with a good multi frequency detector and Minelab can start making ceiling fans.

Well if Tesoro and White's get off their butts( especially Tesoro ) .We could have great detector made here in the USA. Their warranty and customer service it great. White's came out with the v3, but look how long it took them ( and they could have done allot more). Tesoro....Well , they haven't done anything in years. It's time they wake-up . Fisher's quality control sucks. I got a new in the box detector from them .the toggle switch didn't work ,and the coil didn't have holes drilled in the mounting tabs, so I couldn't mount it to the upper shaft. They did take care of it...but how could you miss something like that .
I have the EX and a ET. I think there the best made detector's today. But it seems that Minelab could care less. It all comes down to the dollar....how sad is that ?

Yes "Obammy" is to blame for all those people working for Minelab in the state of Ireland. I was never good in school, is the state of Ireland closer to the east coast or the west coast???? This country was doing great, no unemployment, no wars, and then... "Obammy" came along and in less than a year, we have gone to war in Afghanistan and Iraq, the stock market has taken a plunge and unemployment is higher than ever. And all of this is the blame of "Obammy"........... I think you just got spoiled with such a flawless job George W did

You must be a dumb A$$ democrat who wants to give everything to the illegals and non working idiots.....Now the Government is taking over, just peachy.

Here is the straight scoop from Codan as to their intentions.

The intentions for 2009

Last I heard the state of ireland was somewhere on the west coast. Being an island it floats around a bit though. On some days it can get in the way of Palin seeing Russia from her house.
I wish it was on the east coast instead so I could get a pint of real Irish guinness.

Sorry, couldn't resist...
