Well, it looks like the posts on Minelab's pending move of their manufacturing facility from Ireland to Malaysia was confirmed by the president of the company in a letter to their dealers and will be followed up by a release outside that network.
They will be using the sevrices of Plexus (Company locations) and the Malasyian facility. The transition will take place thru the end of 2009 at which time Irelab will be out of the manufacturing business. The announcement says it is being done since Codan - Minelab's parent company - already uses the Malaysian gruop for their products.
An interesting statement in the announcement is "I also wish to note that the decision is no reflection on the quality of the staff of operation in Ireland and is wholly about lowering costs within the Codan group of companies." Anyone want to venture a guess as to if this means the cost savings will be passed on the end users?
There have been some interesting announcements of late regarding Minelab's new direction in areas such as customer support, service, production and dealer support . . . . . will be interesting to interesting to see where this takes them over the next year or two . . . . . cutting costs in the wrong area in the high end market they reside in can work in more than one direction . . . . . several companies including names such as the original Teknetics, Gold Mountain and others had great detectors . . . . it was the rest of the operation that adversely impacted them . . . .
