Minelab XS Iron nulls

I could use some help in setting up my machine I've never had this problem before. I did some detecting in a friends yard and out by the sidewalk it was no big deal. I could hear the threshold hum and the nulls when I hit iron but when I went into his yard as soon as I drop the coil down it goes completely silent. I lift the coil back up and back comes the threshold hum. Thank you to all those who respond.

I would recommend going all metal mode and checking to see if his yard isn't full of iron. I doubt your detector broke walking from the sidewalk to his yard. How old is his house? Mine dates back to 1850, and perhaps 90% of my yard nulls even if I just discriminate out nails. (a result of old shingle siding being removed and nails going flying)

Even if it is more modern, there could be some large iron objects buried in his yard? Who knows perhaps someone buried a car back there, or a septic tank that wasn't buried deep enough.

I was in an area this morning and the whole place nulls. I put it in AM and you can hear it sing.

That is a very sensitive machine you are using. Turning the sens. down to even the teens will still give you lots of depth and that should take care of too much sensitivity to minerals.

Thanks to all who responded. I need to learn this machine better before I try all metal. My first metal detector was a cheap radio shack model. Then I upgraded to the XS. I've only had it for a couple of months and only know the sounds of a penny and a nickel. I'm digging a test garden now so I can learn a little quicker. Thanks again for the responses.

turn the iron mask way down, switch to ferrous, turn the variability down to 8, slow down and listen for the high tones. Dig anything that bounces around the top right part of the screen. Least that works for me.
