Minelab WM08 1/8 to 1/4 Adapter

Has anyone found an adapter that fits the WM08 to use other headphones? I found one at Radio Shack but it doesn't work. Stem is too short. :( The wireless headphones hurt my ears.

If you have found one and you KNOW it works, could you please post here or PM me the link.

Thanks!

Another 4-6 weeks before ML should/may have the underwater headphones and an unknown date for the adapter.

An adapter sold at auction for $35 it was a homemade one. No good news here, sorry. I also saw one for sale from the UK, but I do not remember where.

I also read on another forum that someone in FL was making a compatible waterproof headphone set for sale. He is taking orders, if he has not overloaded his time frame yet.

I used the Radio Shack adapter and just dremeled about 3/8 of an inch of the plastic housing away. Take it all the way down to the aluminum base. It will allow the adapter to slide all of the way into the opening for the jack on the WM 08. Works like a charm!

Great idea! Thanks for the info. I will do that this evening. :)

Are we talking waterproof adapter?

Part numbers and pictures would be a big help for all.

Thanks Steve, please let me know. :) I took HEBEGB's advice and shaved off the black plastic on mine. It seats very well into the module but my Killer Bees plug is a bit sloppy in the 1/4 in hookup.

No, I am just wanting an adapter to use with my Killer Bees since I don't like the wireless headphones.

WaterWalker,

No, not a waterproof one. I have yet to hear of anyone making an "aftermarket" 1/8" to 1/4" adapter with the proper threads to screw into the Minelab waterproof connector. The one I'm talking about is simply a regular 1/8" to 1/4", but with the 1/8" end "thin" enough, I think, to push in past the threaded portion. I bought one a few weeks ago, but it was too "fat" to fit in far enough to allow the connector to engage. This one, I think, will be thin enough to work. It's made by D'Addario, the guitar folks, so it should be nice quality...

Got a standard 1/8 to 1/4 adapter on Amazon. With shipping it cost around 11.00. It took nearly 10 days to get it unless you have Prime or willing to pay 4 times normal for shipping. It works great when using Gray Ghost but watch volume as if both are wide open the function tone will deafen you.

OK, reporting back...

I have tried three of them now, that all work.

First, I bought this one, and thought it didn't work -- because the 1/8 end was "too fat" to fit into the WM08 securely. HOWEVER, I just recently realized that the wide chrome/metal part UNSCREWS, and can be removed, revealing a thinner, plastic connector end on the inside, and the thinner plastic portion fits very nicely inside the WM08 -- so actually, this one works great (I tested it for sound and it sounds real good). It was from edit and was only $2.69 shipped, from China...

Audio Aux 6.35mm 1/4" Female to 3.5mm 1/8" Male Stereo Headphone Adapter Cable

The only issue with this one is the male end is STEREO, so it MAY not cut off the Equinox speaker if plugged directly into the unit; I only tested it on the WM08 where it works well.

Anyway, here's the second one I bought, when I THOUGHT the first one wouldn't work, and it also worked well (and it's stereo female to mono male, so it SHOULD work in either the WM08 OR plugged directly into the Equinox...)

edit

This one was $5.99 and free shipping, but it's unavailable right now.

But this one was in my headphones case, that I lost when I lost the case, headphones, and all the contents (long story!)

So, when I lost that one, here's the third one I bought most recently, from ebay, for $9.99 and free shipping (and it's ALSO stereo female to mono male, so it should ALSO work in either the WM08 OR plugged directly into the Equinox...)

D'Addario Planet Waves 1/4" Female Stereo 1/8" (3.5mm) Male Mono adapter

Again, to repeat, all three of these work well, on the WM08. I did not test them on the control box connection itself, to confirm if they shut off the Equinox speaker when plugged in; I suspect the mono male ones WILL; the stereo male one -- the first one listed -- may not; I will check to verify if that is important to anyone.

Obviously, NONE are waterproof.

Hope this helps!

The one that Steve listed (D'Addario Planet Waves 1/4" Female Stereo 1/8" (3.5mm) Male Mono adapter) works perfect and could not fit into the WM08 any better. I would highly recommend this. Paired to Equinox 800 with my Black Widows and couldn't be happier with the sound.

Do you have a link for that?
thanks!

Maybe someone can educate me on the reason for this adapter and why the need for the WM08. I am missing something, if you have low latency wireless headphones why go this route? Sorry for being such a noob on this topic.

NCtoad -- sent you a PM.

Hotrod65 -- the reason for the WM08 is that some folks really like the current, corded headphones they are using for other detectors, BUT still like the idea of being "untethered" from the machine. SO, they would like to use their wired headphones that they are used to, but make them "wireless" by plugging them into the WM08 and being untethered from the machine.

This is how most of us land hunters running the CTX use our headphones -- standard corded metal-detecting headphones (like SunRay Pro Golds, or Gray Ghosts, or Killer Bees, or whatever), plugged into the CTX's WM10 module. Thus, a wireless connection from the CTX to the WM10, but a wired connection from the WM10 to the headphones. Then, we can simply clip the WM10 to our shirt, or put it in a pocket, and we are then not "tethered" to the detector itself.

So, for folks who have interest in using their favorite heaphones with the Equinox, the WM08 allows that...BUT...the WM08 has a 1/8" headphone jack, NOT a 1/4" jack -- and thus is not compatible with most detector heaphones. So, an adapter is needed -- thus the 1/8" to 1/4" adapters I mentioned above. BUT -- as one final complicating factor, not just ANY 1/8" to 1/4" adapter will work. Reason being, Minelab is using the same proprietary screw-in 1/8" jack on the WM08 as they do on the control box itself. Now, you can use a "regular" 1/8" plug-in connector IF -- IF the connector is small enough to fit inside the screw-in connector. SOME jacks are too large to fit in. The ones I highlighted above all "fit" inside the screw-in connector on the WM08 (or the control box). NO, they obviously don't "screw in," but they are small enough to fit inside the connector, allowing you to use the adapter, and thus, whatever pair of heaphones you desire.

A bit confusing, but the whole problem stems from three things...

1. Minelab chose NOT to use a standard 1/4" jack on the WM08, but instead chose a 1/8" jack...
2. Minelab chose NOT to use even a standard 1/8" jack, but instead used the same waterproof screw-in jack as is used on the control box (DESPITE the WM08 being non-waterproof)...
3. Minelab does NOT have the adapter (1/8" proprietary screw-in jack to standard 1/4" jack) available yet. They WILL have this adapter availabe in the future, but it, along with all the other accessories, is not available yet thus forcing people to have to "improvise."

Steve

Oh now I get it, thanks for taking the time to lay that out for me! Was not aware of those issues but certainly makes sense.

Sure thing, hotrod! Bottom line, if an Equinox user likes the Bluetooth headphones, and plans to use them full-time, there is basically ZERO need to ever use the WM08. The WM08 is really just for people who DON'T want to use Bluetooth headphones, but instead "corded" ones, but still would like to be detached/untethered from the machine itself...

Steve

My son has the 800, he uses the Bluetooth headphones that came with it without the WM08. We really did not understand why the WM08 was needed. So question, I am considering getting a 600 which comes with corded headphones. Can I use his WM08 module and the wired phones that comes with the 600 without the need for a special 1/8" to 1/4" adapter? I would like to be wireless to the detector.

Thanks,

Eric
