Hi,ya all in our club a lot of good folks never seem to be happy with there minelabs and after paying out a whole pile of cash i can understand it..no one detector is the best but in our club (Washington state) minelab is a dirty word.. a pity as i think they are a fine detector

I can't speak for Minelab detectors in general and I haven't had my SE very long, but it seems to me, the SE anyway, is sorta like playing a slide guitar. While most can learn to play a guitar, playing a slide guitar takes patients and practice, and even then playing a slide guitar is not for everyone. But for those who take the time to learn it the rewards can be great.

AMEN Southwind...:clapping:

Far too many people doing well with them ~ IMHO !!!

Just kidding ... I know Minelabs are NOT for everybody, it takes patients and perseverance, especially with the Explorer, but well worth the rewards.
Simply owning a Ferrari does not make one a race car driver !!!
Maybe your club members should contact someone who really knows how to use one and share the knowledge with them at a metting or real hunt.

Good Hunting

to pop out the silver:detecting: Seriously though...there is a wealth of knowledge here on the forum at your fingertips for ANYONE who wants to give the Explorer a try.. The key is to not get overwhelmed by trying too much too quick. Lot's of experienced hunters for you who each has his own way or settings to try. Mike Bearden is actually one of the first ones who guided me along. The list goes on...NH Bob...Mike Virginia Beach...James ND...Jimp....Golddigger...Mike Moutray...Dan on another forum....SNOWY LOTS of you and i apologize if I left someone out over the last couple of years. I'm by NO means an expert...but I find my share of goodies.

Bryce, we all have slightly different preferences with our settings on our Explorers don't we.

And we ALL ~ each and every one of us contribute with our posts, # even settings that'd better be avoided !

What an incredible data base this forum has become !!!

If anybody has a problem, they only have to do a search by typing the words eg. pinpointing,
then click to find any references to that word mentioned in scores of previous posts.

I must say, I really love my Explorer SE, and I've had 'em all ~ XS, II, now the SE...:detecting:

other brands, then those of us smart enough to use Explorers will find all the deep old coins and goodies that every other brand passes over. I've used top of the line Garrett and Fisher machines with moderate success, but the Explorer puts those other brands to sleep, hands down. Period, end of discussion.

Yup, make sure everyone out there uses another brand, cuz heaven knows I don't find a damn thing with my XS!

HH all us Explorer users- Good luck to those using something else...

Wouldn't it be fun to crash an all White's metal detecting meeting like that with an SE. What a way to make friends, huh?? I am sure there is probably 1 or 2 guys in there that could give a run for the SE's money with their DFX's, but I think they might change their opinions of "Minelabs being a problem" to "minelabs are a problem to walk behind". My "problem" Minelab found me a 1831 Silver Capped Bust 5 cent piece last night at 6 inches, in a plowed bean field with a piece of shotgun brass in the same hole. That coin was so small, I had to have the X-1 probe within two inches of it to sound off. It's my first capped bust. Has a nail hole through the 18 in the date, could of been worse the hole could of been through the 31 and then I would never know the date:ranting:

Isn't that the state where all the Loggers live and work? That being the case, the only reason I can think of for not liking the Minelabs is, They don't hold an Edge. After 2 or 3 trees they need resharpening.:poke:

I have noticed that if something takes effort to learn and a person is using something else with fairly good results, it's easier to trash the harder to learn one. This is regardless of what it is in life it seems, people are just being human. If the most popular two people in a large group are dumb as stumps, or just bull headed and they don't like something they bad mouth it to no end because of ignorance ( or the ability to learn something challenging). Being human nature most are like sheep, and they follow along with what the two said. So be it, if a group puts the thumbs down to Minelab that's good, that means it leaves lots behind for those who want a little learning challenge. REMEMBER THAT NOTHING IS FREE IN THIS LIFE, HARD WORK = RESULTS. That's my little rant for this day,

I'm happy with mine. I guess it all comes down to you have to read the directions. Not only read, but understand them.

Warpony,
I have a new Explorer SE after 10 years of XLT's and DFX's. It is a different machine to say the least but it goes deep with no question. The White's give better digital and graphical information where the Minelab's are more of a "sounds" machine.

I really like the SE at the beach in all metal mode but it can drive me nuts relic hunting around an iron infested cellar hole. I still use a DFX along with the SE and both are great metal detectors depending on what you want to hunt. If I want raw depth I'll take the SE. If I want to sweep through trash quickly with good target identification I'll take the DFX with a small coil.

It's like comparing a .45 ACP autoloader to a .357 Magnum revolver. Both are going to get the job done but the sound will be a little different.
