Dug this quote out of the new forum for the new detector...
At least in my soil my Explorers were never as deep as my GT is, and that is comparing both machines using the stock 10" coils and not just the 12x10 I'm using now which gets the GT even deeper. My pet theory is that FBS goes from 1.5Khz to 100khz while BBS goes from 1.5 to 25khz (or is it 27? Can't remember right now), and that in some soils the higher FBS frequencies can reflect off the ground minerals or matrix and cause it to get less depth due that reflection, or at least because you may have to run at lower sensitivity settings to calm down the ground "glare". As said, thus far my GT and 12x10 can easily see any super deep or even badly masked coins that my friend has found with his Etrac and Pro Coil before digging.
I think these FBS and BBS machines are already for the most part maxed out in depth due to the limits of physics in VLF science. I believe any BBS or FBS machine can out do the other based on coil choice. Bigger coil= More Depth...To a point, like say 12 or 14" in coil size and then you don't gain on coin sized objects by going any bigger than that. How badly your soil is mineralized determines what the max size of the coil can be. In my soil I have a feeling that limit is about 12 or 13", because I found the 15x12 got less depth than even the stock 10" coil in my soil, while the 12x10 gets deeper than both of them.
Better separation? Again, in my opinion that depends on just how sharp the coil's detection field is and no amount of processing (or even faster processing) can get around those laws of nature. The coil needs to be able to light up one target while not the other. If the coil's beam hits shallower trash first the field in effect bursts and can not reach further into the ground to see the coin. All a faster recovery speed means is that you can swing faster and not risk missing targets as much. Keep your sweep slow and it's not an issue.
I'll be digging through the information on Minelab's site that this guy references and will post what I come up with on it. Even if it does indeed say that BBS is deeper, like I tend to feel, these machines (BBS & FBS) are still are pretty much maxed out in VLF technology in terms of depth and so whichever one is using a bigger coil will beat the other with a smaller coil in depth. That goes for all of them...Xcal, GT, Etrac, SE Pro, Old Explorers. The key is the coil. That's what it comes down to for both better separation and depth.

FBS will never be deeper than BBS if you read Bruce Candy's blog on detector tech on the minelab site.
i think they have tried to please everyone with this machine and that is never possible and they went a bit overboard.
