Ran across a large robust Minelab detector today at a local pawn shop. It looked in almost new condition and had a large search loop attached. It's label showed "VLF+ tech. Just wondering if any one here has used such a detector and being 1998 tech I guess it's way out of date? Thanks for any info on this detector. Charles

Don't rule out the usefulness of this detector just because it is a few years old, I just picked up a Tesoro Aztec (early 80's) and it gives my Bounty Hunter Quick Silver(4 months old) a run for its money, literally.

When the Relic Hawk was released quite a few guys who frequented the forums bought one, but most of them didn't keep them very long. I considered buying one, probably would have if the option for a smaller coil had been available. It operated at 5 khz and according to those who tried them they had great depth, but the weight, balance and that the 15 inch was too big to work well except where targets were widely separated were major complaints. They were also very expensive compared to the Nautilus models most dedicated relic hunters were using. Some of the guys from Great Britian and France liked them for hunting the fields and I think they're still available over there, and may still be here. I saw a used one on Ebay awhile back that sold for over $900 so if you can get a good deal on the one in the pawn shop and don't like it you could probably make a few bucks on it

i just bought one for 25 bucks belive that... the wires are broke on the hoop, im tryin to fix it now... got any ideas

The Minelab Relic Hawk is a rock solid deep seeking detector that was aimed squarely at the American Market. The ground cancelling control range was set up for North American soil conditions It was built to military specs. The detector runs at 5kHz and this frequency is perfect for a relic machine, it can penetrate deep and responds well to all metals. The detector has fixed and manual ground balance and a variable ferrous discriminator and is powered by a 12volt gel cell.
To me this is a detector that will never age, it is basic, powerfull easy to use and built like a tank. Even though the detector is a bit out of balance with the 15 inch DD it is one deep detecting son of a gun. It would also make a pretty good big gold nugget finder and will work in reasonably high mineralisation.
This machine could not handle the extreme iron mineralization here in the Australian gold fields and it was never aimed at the Australian market.
So for coyboy80920, 25 bucks you cannot loose, I hope you get the coil fixed.
