Minelab step by step procedure

I am considering purchasing a CTX but am concerned about setting it up for the best performance in a given area.
I know a lot of people have posted what they have found to be settings that work for them.
Does Minelab have a step by step procedure for owners to follow to assure the best performance of the CTX in any given area or is it just time consuming trial & error experimenting?
I don't want to waste a lot of time experimenting every time I go to a new area.

like most detectors it has a few basic turn on and go programs that are pretty good but like most probably won't be the optimum for where you are hunting. as far as a step by step there is no such thing because every sight, soil condition, trash, etc. is different so one program won't cover every thing. that is where the ctx really shines, you can program it to get the optimum performance whether you are in highly mineralized red clay, neutral soil, the beach or under water. there is a series of learning programs at the top of the page that might help http://www.findmall.com/read.php?87,2019302,2019302#msg-2019302 by harryhh.. the machine can look way to complicated but with time and experimentation you will be amazed at it's performance and what you will be able to do with it. dfly

The short answer is: No. The instruction manual tells you how to set up a new program and add it to the detector. As Oregon Dragonfly stated there a just too many variables for Minelab to give specific setups for every conceivable situation. I don't know how else to obtain optimum performance for each site without spending time experimenting with different settings. But that's the beauty of an advanced detector, you can set it up differently for different locations. This isn't a "beep and dig" detector and shouldn't be treated as one. I find that the basic "coin" program works pretty good in my area with just a couple of adjustments.

Yea, don't buy the machine and just use the stock programs, that would be a waste. Take the time or wait until you have it.

Thanks everyone for your input. I will be using it on the salt wet sand as well as the dry sand, so I might be better off with an Excalibur.

Nice reply, Nolanation! No use buying all the "bells and whistles" if all you need is a bell. Good advice!
