Minelab Sovereign XS - Coil, Battery.

Hello,
I just picked up another Sovereign XS. It came with no charger, this battery (is that an original battery?), and 8" coinsearch coil (is the coil waterproof?)
What are the best battery options now for them? would like to use rechargeable pack and double AA setup. It has the red/black male plug in the housing.
Thanks for help.

Scott

Hi Scott, That battery pack doesn't look like the original one that came with the XS. They were usually all blue or white if I remember correctly. It MAY be a Sunray aftermarket pack but I'm not sure. If you want to use rechargeables it may be tough unless they can produce enough voltage. Most I believe are 1.2 volts and that would only make 9.6 volts total. I think the Sov needs at least 9 volts to operate properly so if it DOES work, it will only be for a short time before the voltage drops below the needed minimum for the detector. Your best bet would be rechargeable alkalines as they are 1.5 volt to start with. Congrats on the CoinSearch coil! It looks real clean and was always my all time favorite for the Sov. It is NOT waterproof however but water resistant. Do not submerge it. What I used to do as an extra measure of caution was to unscrew the coil strain relief and dab some silicone around the wire entrance of the coil. I also used to run a bead around the coil cover once cleaned so no sand or dirt would get in there as the cover is very difficult to remove without cracking if your not really careful. Good luck with that combo. My all time favorite version of both Sov XS and Coinsearch coil. HH George Fatizzi

Id recommend aqua seal or an rtv silicone over regular silicone at the connector. Even my waterproof coils I at least use teflone tape there. Wont the maxxpack rechargeable battery work?

I never seen a battery pack like that with the color of the batteries, so it is not stock or the Sun Ray ones. On the E auction site there are batteries made for the Sovereign XS with the plug in type like the XS uses, just so a search for Minelab Sovereign and you should see the batteries and also the chargers that work excellent that shut down when fully charged. These batteries are long lasting too and not a bad price either, much less than the ones that were made for them from Minelab.
You do have my favorite model Sovereign and the favorite coil other then the last model the GT, but if I couldn't have a GT it would be hands down the XS model.

Thank you very much Rick, John, George for your replies and help.
I will take the advice and seal the coil and cover.
I will purchase the re-charge pack with charger from that E-site.

And I will hit the beach and find a few more reales for the month.
Much thanks again guys.

The Sovereign XS is one of my favorite models. You may want to make an alkaline pack with a connector, these are inexpensive and easy to make. This would help while you are out in the field and have a low rechargeable pack. Good Luck Ron

Hello again,

I decided to build my own but before I solder them together I need to ask the experts.
I have 2- 4 AA holders with red and black leads.
1-female plug (red and black leads) that fits the current male plug coming out of the Sovereign XS.
My question is- Do I connect and solder all the wires together based on color code? reds to red...blacks to black?

Many thanks guys, I'm almost up and running again with your help.
