Minelab Sovereign GT Settings help NEWBIE

I just got a Minelab Sovereign GT , I want to hit the beaches in NJ. I'm a little confused with all the switches and knobs. can anyone help me out with some good settings. I've used the whites MXT in the past. If someone with experience can call me and go over settings and how they work that would be great. I learn better if someone explains it by phone... here is my number 732-671-4537..ask for ron....thanks again for help

I find the top center switch, (All Metal/Disc/Iron Mask) switch to be the most confusing switch on the whole machine. I wish someone would help me understand it better.

David

Leave it in DISC All Metal On. Set the tracking to pinpoint. When you want to pinpoint a target simply throw the DISC switch to all metal and it's now in pinpoint. When down pinpointing throw it back to DISC Iron Mask On. Put the sensitivity in the lowest manual position (all the way clockwise) and sweep over an area that isn't nulling out from iron or sounding off to targets. Slowly raise the sensitivity and keep sweeping as you do. When the unit starts to null out back it off until a steady threshold is heard. While hunting if you find the threshold is constant you may wish to raise sensitivity more until it starts to null slightly here and there. Too much sensitivity to cost you depth if it's nulling out and falsing.

Turn it on and max the volume as it may sound the same, but this is for target volume so if you want to hear the deeper targets it is best to be max out. Set the silent search toggle to threshold and set the iron mask on/off, and all metal to all metal and adjust the threshold to a slight hum then switch that toggle to iron mask on, leave the disc and the notch all the way off or all the way counter clockwise. Now most will use noise cancel set on 2 and the track/lock/ pinpoint to pinpoint as this switch is only active when in all metal and I find it easier when I want to pinpoint a target is just switch the iron mask on to all metal and it will be in the pinpoint mode so I can pinpoint with no problem. To start off with it is recommended to leave it set in auto while is all the way counter clock wise until it click into auto, this way it will have the smoothest threshold and easier to use. After you get some experience with it you can put it in manual and I find around the 10-12 o'clock position sees to give me the best depth, but sometime you have to go much slower too so it is not a constant null of the threshold. Threshold coming and going is normal, but a solid null is not and may have to slow the swing of the coil down.

After a while you will see it is really a very simple detector to use after you have used it a little.

OK, for the purpose of this post lets assume I am a total idiot!

Concerning the All Metal switch;

Top position is obviously All Metal.

Center position is obviously Discriminate.

Down position????? Is it Disc, or Disc with Iron Mask, or what?

The way it's labeled is confusing to me..... Especially with the ON/Off label. When its in the Off position, what is off?

David

There is 3 position switch, up all the way is all metal which activates the pinpoint / track / lock mode toggle switch. Now down 1 is disc with iron mask on and down all the way is disc with iron mask off. Now with it on it can see good targets closer to iron, but you can get some iron falsing, but to me it is rare I get fooled as I always come at a target from a different angle and iron will null. With it off it will be not falsing much at all, but can miss the coins close to iron trash.
So what it comes down too is you have a all metal mode and 2 disc modes with one of the disc mode uses iron mask to see good target closer to iron trash while the other one may run smoother with no falsing, but will also miss some good targets closer to iron plus null more too.

I hope that will help you.

some very use full tips there chaps i too have a gt so am interested in all differant settings on the machine
regards carl-ecl... uk.

Thanks very much Rick. It makes sense to me now. I appreciate your information and any other info you would like to share. I relic hunt and mostly have the switches in this position..... Top two in the down most position, bottom two in the up most position then I just switch to all metal to pinpoint. I may try running the Disc switch in the center position just to see what difference it makes.
