MInelab Sovereign Elite, no battery, help me diy!

Greetings everyone, i am new to this site, and i just found it earlier today. I have a major problem, i bought an old Sovereign elite for about 10 $, with headphones and a Excelerator S coil, but it has no battery(battery holder). After massive searches on the web i councluded that i cannot afford to pay around 100 $ for a battery and wait ages to arive from the US. Instead i wondered if i can tie together 8 1.5v alkaline batteries(and how) or if i could just connect it to a 12 v 2.3ah battery, like this one ->http://www.mediafun.ro/Acumulator-stationar-12V-2-3Ah-Leoch-18244 . And in the end, which is plus + and which end is negative - on the detector's 2 battery connectors.

Looks like a great machine, and it gives a much better impresion than my Bounty hunter discovery, so i'm really eager to get it to work, and i'l appreciate any help!

Thank you, and all the best!

Fox,don't build a battery pack or rig a battery, the way it sets you could probably make a quick 350-400 bucks,LOL don't like to see a Sovereign abused.Very simple don't fix something that's not broken. An alkaline pack will cost you about 30.00 used, you may get enough money by selling your Bounty Hunter to pay for batteries.Good Luck Ron

Radio Shack used to sell battery holders. I've seen them other places but cant recall where at the moment. I'm sure theyre all over the web as well.

If you Have to have it now, go somewhere that sells skinny pvc pipe, cut to length, securely tape the wires and off you go.

Bur seriously, you got a Sov for $10 and are balking on the battery? If you want to triple your money, just let me know....

First thing before you get too serious on a battery pack is to know the Elite is in good working order as there should have been either a alkaline pack or rechargeable one with the detector, if not I wonder why.
I built a pack for my GT using a Lithium Ion I believe it is as it was made for remote control planes and cars, but used a bad rechargeable pack and wired it in and the battery is held in place my industrial Velcro. The pack I got off E-Bay was around $8 and had to buy a charger for this battery which I think was around $15 as it is a special charger and not a Ni cad charger to charge this battery. I tried it out and seem to work fine, but didn't use it for long time. These batteries are around 11.7 volts or something like this as they are over 11 volts so there is enough voltage to run the Elite.
I don't think I would try the battery you put a link too as it would be too heavy to mount, but think it would last for a while that's for sure.
Being it was $10 and no battery pack gets me wondering if it even works, if it does you got a great deal, if not you can still sell it and make some decent money for parts.
If it was me I would try to find a 12 volt power supply or some companies or hobby shop make a rechargeable pack that has 10 cells in it to give you 12 volts needed and try to connect it to the Elite some how to make sure it works, if it does than I think you can make a better connection to the Elite and hold the battery in place with some Velcro and use it that way.

First of all thank everyone for the insight, i stayed up all night last night, and eventually got it going, i also didn't knew if it was i working order, so it was a nice feeling to hear the first buzzing. I taped 8 alakilne 1.5v batteries directly inside the machine, well, i'ts not pretty but it works! I'm not going to take it to the fields yet, i ordered this -> http://ots.mwrc.net/images/dyn/sitemin_file2.php/product_images/119474/image/SP-8%2BBattery%2BHolder%2Bcopy.jpg so i'm just waiting for it to arive to properly mount it.

I don't want to sell my bounty hunter, since its a machine that i like very much, very easy to operate, accurate, and damn lightweight (my previous garret ace 250 was toring my arms apart).

Well, this minelab is not in the best condition, the coil looks like it was cracked and "glued" with resin, i like the fact that is huge and working.

I got it that cheap because i bought it from the ministry of internal affairs(something like that), along with some other machines(bounty hunter discovery, garret 250, and other 2 sovereigns for about 70-80 $) that were confiscated by the police from unothorized treasure hunters that got arrested. It had coil and headphones, but no battery. I'm really looking forward to test it and get the feel of it, looking on the web i read opinions that it one of the best machines out there, but also quite a "strange animal" when it comes to handling and understaning it. Looking forward to test it.

I want to thank you guys for the fast and comprehensive replys. Il post some pictures with my work so far with the soldering iron.

Sory for the badly drawn diagram.

Looks good as to being able to come up with a idea to see that it worked and the idea of the battery pack you come up with. This is a good start and with a little more fine tuning you could have a great detector.
The Sovereigns are a bit different as you will see and some hate them while others with the patience to get to know them are seeing these are some great detectors and maybe the best or one of the best out there.
