Minelab Sov GT and Nugget shooting???

grumpy

New member
Can some of you experienced nugget shooters tell me if you can sucessfully use a MInelab Sov GT for nugget shooting? We know they will pick up gold as will almost any good detector but are they something that would do a fair job of finding nuggets???
We would like to try doing a bit of hunting around our area in the rockies where we live but hate to waste our time if the machine wont work we can try a Eureka gold or ? and forget the GT except for coins and such.
Thanks for any input

It will find gold, but only bigger size nuggets, and if I were you I would use the Eureka much better for finding gold. Ground balance is the main thing you want when trying for nuggets, The soverine has no way to set it, its pre set, for genral ground, But like I said it will find nuggets of say: a 1/4 oz or better. But its better suited to jewlery or coins. Grubstake

Thanks Grubstake;
I will check into the Eureka Gold. Can you tell me what is the disadvantage of it over the P I machines. Not as deep or not as small a nugget?
Thanks again

They will get smaller gold than a PI and the so called invisable gold, but won't have the depth of a PI or the stablity, in bad soil. But they do have 3 freq. so you can play around with them the higher freq. will do better on small gold. Not a bad gold detector. It really depends on how you are hunting, how many times, if you expect to be in a patch with good gold, I'd get a PI. you can pick them up a 2200 sd or gpx for around $1500.00 used or a new Vlf for around $6-800.00 Depend on how much you will be detecting. If its just a once in awhile thing, them the Ureka should be ok. If your going to be a full timer, you may want to get a used PI. Grubstake PI has it over the VLF hands down.

I think Minelab added "Ground tracking to the Sovereign platform", hence the GT designation. I also believe that they said in their ads that it could now be used for nugget hunting because of the added feature. Check the owners manual. You can download one from the Minelab website.
Hope this helps!

Kinda resurrecting an old thread, but there's a madness to my method. Anyway, I traded for a Sov. GT a little while ago (10" & 16" coils came with it) and decided to do some testing. Well, it was snowing like an SOB and now it's raining cats 'n dogs, so it was play in the garage time. I have a 4-5 grain 'nugget' that I use as a tester and decided to see how the Sov. would do on it. laying the 'nugget' on the concrete (VDI 86 on the MXT), the Sov. had no problem picking it up with the 16" coil, disc. mode, at a couple of inches. Surprisingly enough, the disc. mode actually seems to be more sensitive than the AM mode. This has me wondering about claims that the Sov. is only good for 1 oz nuggets and such (have one of those too). I'm actually thinking of using my Sov. as a deep/big nugget finder 'cause I can't afford a PI at present (anyone want to trade their White's TDI or SD2200 and later PI for a near 1 oz nugget?). Already have a GMT and F75 for the small stuff. Will be doing a few more experiments when the weather gets better, but so far it looks promising. ...Willy.
