It is a bit differnt and may take a little differnt learning curve than the Explorer. I notice it will lock on to a target better, both good and bad targets. Mine seem to carry over a good signal to any metal object, so if you have a good coin signal it seems to lock on to this signal, now all trash will also give this signal. I find that after you get a good signal you think is good you pick the coil up and let it reset itself, then go over that same area and if it was a false signal it will null or have a differnt tone than it had before. If it is a good signal I will do one more thing and that is switch to all metal or relic and if this was a high pitched signal in the coin mode it will be in the all metal or relic mode too if it is a coin, but now if it was a signal of a nail than in ferrous the tones will be low pitched in relic or all metal and high tone in coin mode. Mine the pinpointing is a little slow too as after i get a good signal and lift the coil and push the pinpoint it takes a little while for I can get a pinpoint signal. This dont do this every time, but more so if you are hunting where there is more than one signal. In air test it is fine and in the test garden where you are going over one target is works fine too and just something a person has to get used to.
It is not a Explorer, but shares the same weight and built to look the same other than the color and the screen layout. I think they have a good set up being able to switch from one mode to the other to check out a target before you dig. I feel the tones are too high pitched for some with bad hearing on the higher tones that the Explorer you can set them to your hearing, the Quatrro you cant. Like I say I feel the Quattro will lock on a target better and our few test I have done against a Explorer XS shows the Quattro was able to pick up every target the Explorer did, but sounded better on the Quattro. I also feel for most the Quatrro will work fine, but in the experienced hand withthe right setting the Explorer will go deeper and get some good target close to trash better. The reason is the Quattro will lock in better, so a trash item may lock on to it and miss the good target next to it. By running heavy trash will help if you are in very trashy area with nails I have seen as it will recover faster from the iron, but I feel the Explorer will do it even faster yet.
My own opinion is that some of the curcuit on the Quattro are some updates that will be used in the new Explorer when and if they make it, as I am sure Minelab is always looking for new ways to improve what they have now to be used on any future models.
Over all the Quattro is a great setup, but like any detector there is a learning curve you will learn as you use it.
