Hi everyone,

I have been following several threads and what a lot of info. I will be getting my new GT tomorrow and cant hardly wait. I just wanted to say hello from the Galveston area

Current machines = garrett 1350, Detector Pro PI and Headhunter

Thank you goodmore. It appears that I have quite a learning curve ahead of me but it should be worth it!!

First of all welcome to the forum.
There is an abundance of information to be had on this forum. Do not be afraid to ask questions.
there are a lot of people on this forum that will be able to help you.
I don't want to sound like I'm trying to scare you off but the Sovereign has some what of a learning curve.
The only stupid question is the question that's not asked.
Don't get discouraged practice with the machine.
I would suggest that you purchase this book; Finding Gold, Silver and Coins with the Minelab Sovereign and Excalibur metal detectors By Clive James Clynick.
Good Luck

Thanks Guys - I will certainly buy the book. Ya'll have a great day

Welcome !!!.....You will enjoy your Sovereign ......Ask plenty of questions ....You will get plenty of answers .....Jim

Welcome from down under,

2 years into the GT now, WHAT A WONDERFUL MACHINE.

The more you use it the more you'll love it.

Thanks everyone. Had to travel today. My GT arrived by UPS and I was not there. My sister picked it up and I am eagerly awaiting to arrive back home tomorrow. It's like Christmas Eve and i am not going to be able to sleep...maybe a little adult beverage will help!!!

Welcome rdavisr,

I live in Friendswood and hunted Galveston at Stewart Beach this last summer. Myself and one other hunting buddy have Sovereigns, I am just learning it myself, but he is much more accomplished with it and did well at Stewart this year. I like mine, but like I said I am very much in the learning stage.

it would be great to hook up with yall some weekend. I got mine assembled this morning. The 1st thing I noticed was the weight...wow

Ok so my 1st trip went well I suppose. The weight was not as big of a challenge as i thought. Hunted for 5+ hours and never really got tired...of the weight. I did however get tired of digging to Australia on every signal....

Found 3 dimes - at this rate it might be awhile to pay this one off

So I have two questions if ya'll dont mind

The tone changes after a null and gets low and stays there until I hit another target..is that proper operation?

Whats the secret to pinpointing? I seem to be off by 4-6 inches each time a signal is heard

Thanks!!!

That is normal for the threshold to change to the last target. A sovereign and Excal exclusive!

Pinpointing takes practice. Switch to all metal for the most accurate. Raise the coil up in the air above the target in all metal. It narrows the field down. Practice , Practice.

I would be glad to have you along on beach hunt at Stewart. I just have to find the time. This winter when the north winds drive the water even further out during low tides I am planning to get those places you ordinarily need a water proof machine for.

As far as pinpointing there are several threads here where this is discussed. Do a search in this thread for pinpointing (Sovereign /Excalibur) and go back at least 90 days and you will get dozens of hits where the more experienced users describe the technique they use. One even has some good graphics attached.

Thanks Guys

Otlew - That would be great. I too hunt during the winter. That would be a good time.

The 10 and 8" Tornado coils are DD. In the image below, the width of the field is say 10 inches for the 10" coil, that is at the surface and tapers down as you go deeper. I am guessing here but if the target is at 3" below the surface then it could be hitting it could be in the middle of wide field and be off quite a bit. So raising the coil off of the ground would narrow the width and reduce the margin of error. Another trick I read for the DD coils is tip the coil nose down lift up and use the front tip of the coil to find the target. I have tried this in air tests and it seems to work pretty well.

i dont think that DD wide scan drawing represents the true detecting zone, looking from the front its very much thinner after a couple of inches down, more like a knife
