Minelab Musketeer Colt Questions

Hi folks, wasn't sure where to post this as I see there is no Musketeer section on the forum. I just got a new in the box Minelab Musketeer Colt. I have been detecting for many years swinging mainly Tesoro detectors, I normally like tot lot type hunting for jewelry & clad but thought that I would let the tot lots refill and try for a few older deeper coins, that's why I got the Colt. I am having good luck with the Colt, digging coins from the same places I have hunted many times. The Colt is deeper than the Tesoro's I have owned but think it isn't at its full potential. Here is where I need you folks help - most every Tesoro I have ever had (there's been alot of them) chirped when the sensitivity is turned to max which tells me that they are putting out full power. When I turn my Colt sensitivity to max it is completely quiet, not a chirp. Maybe they are suppose to be like this I don't know as Minelab is new to me. Another thing I am thinking is the Colt's ground balance is set alittle too positive for my ground, because when in all metal mode if I drop the coil towards the ground I get a pretty good beep. I know with the Tesoro's there is internal pots. to adjust the ground balance, etc. I have read that on the lower end Minelabs such as the Colt the pots. are labeled, I haven't opened up the control box as I don't want to screw anything up or void my warranty. I see two screws on the control box - one on each side of the coil connector jack. I was wondering if I took out the screws if the control panel would come out of the housing so I could find the pots. Do you think that I would get alittle better performance/depth if I figured out how to get the sens. so it chirps at full sens. and get the ground balance set for my area. Like I mentioned the Colt is working very well and am really happy with it but would like it at is full potential. Thanks all. Steve.

might get an answer in the sovereign/excalibur forum as most seem to post there regarding the musky, sorry cant help on the topic as i have never used one

Thanks kered. Will try it there.

Thanks everyone, I have all the needed info if I ever decide to do anything to my Colt. A great detector indeed. Steve.

Opened a Colt up yesterday and the pots were not labeled though this one had been modified and home repaired. (Fieldmaster's were good in that they told you what did what and had a card insert so you could make no mistake, pity other companies didn't all do the same !)

To get inside just drop the batteries out, disconnect the coil and remove the two screws. Then get your headphones !
Plug the headphones in. Press slightly sideways on the jack whilst pushing up on the control box connector. The slight angle/pressure on the jack will allow it to be used to pull at the same time. This will break the small blob of "glue" thats behind the face plate and the circuit board can be slid out.
When you reassemble you could miss out the glue but the front panel will flex as you insert/withdraw the headphone jack.

To be honest I would leave as is and sell the detector on and buy a Musketeer Advantage. The coil seems a little better and is lighter and you will have an adjustable ground balance as standard. Just setting your Colt to the one site will help there but could make things worse on another site. Wire out and fit an external G.B. and the detector will be worthless in a trade in at a future date.
