:minelab:MeterQuestion...digimeter 180 ( new style)

That is the nice thing about the Digimeter is that there is a calibration control on the back of the meter to adjust for any coil you want to use. It also helps to calibrate or check it each time you use it so the target ID will be right on. It is easy to check the calibration each time or even after a while of detecting as I just throw a dime or quarter on the ground and swing the coil over it and just going over just the coin I want to see a 179-180 and if not will adjust the calibration control until I do.When ever you switch coils you check the calibration and target ID will be right on for any target not mask by another target.

I was worried because I read on the net that you had to use a sunray meter with the sunray coil to match them up. I am waiting for a xs I bought, got the digimeter already, ordered the 5" intruder and a rod from plugger, so it's not here yet. Have a excal, and cant wait to get this puppy out and running. Should be about another 4 or 5 days. Now I just have to find a 180 printout chart to see what stuff reads. Thanks for the help. Jim

Hey Jerseydigger if you do a search on this forum you will find a chart of the various targets. I bought my digimeter used and the previous owner glued the chart on top of the meter. Very handy. Also there is such a huge amount of targets and number's out there that it might be benefical to you to only try to remember the most common targets and to rely on your ear's for a better ID on all the target's.
good hunting Gary

I saw a few before, and I don't believe there was a digisearch one for a 180 minelab. Would it be the same as a a80 sunray? Thanks, Jim

Not mine, i got it of the net, how acurate it is i don't know

180-177 1

Meant to say I think it's more accurate for the GT because the other charts I compared my findings to didn't match up well on certain targets such as nickles. I did the chart running in noise band 2, which many say matches the older Sovereigns that couldn't change bands better. Still, for one I think my nickels are reading much higher. Have to scan in a few other coins yet and re-post it because some I listed (not in bold print) are from the old charts until I can confirm or deny those numbers.

I don't think the meter you are using matters much so long as it's calibrated to 180 on a dime or quarter, but then again I guess there could be slight changes in some numbers through out the meter's scale. Very slight, if any. I used the "new" Minelab Digisearch meter for my chart if that matters. Any Sovereign meter should work with any coil, but I have seen one guy say that the internal meter mod (third party takes out your speaker and installs a volt meter for the VDI to sit in) say that the SEF coils wouldn't work with that one.

That's the great thing about the Sovereign. Unlike other machines, the VDI can be calibrated to match each new coil used exactly. Changing coils from say small to large can effect how well the machine see's certain targets. For instance, a small silver half dime on a 8" coil might hit much harder and thus conduct further up the scale than it will on a larger coil. By calibrating the machine to each new coil used it can compensate for slight differences somewhat so that the same target reads the same number on both coils. The other reason why it's a very powerful feature to have on the Sovereign is that it can also compensate for slight changes in ground conditions that might draw targets slightly off scale. This isn't as much a problem on Minelab's FBS and BBS machines than it is your typical detector, but it's added insurance to be able to calibrate the meter to a buried target on the Sovereign at each new site.

I've seen some users of certain machines (model names with held to avoid any flame wars) complain about how changing coils will put targets off a bit on their machines in response.

Here's a link to that chart...

Also need to put a link in that thread for the ring VDI chart thread I did, since they both good hand in hand. Think I'll do that now to both those threads so they are tied together for future reference. I like to carry my chart shrunk down and clear taped over a piece of card board for quick reference. Sometimes I'll quickly refresh my memory on certain targets that I have a feeling might be in the area, such as silver 3 cent pieces or other "odd" coins. When an area is loaded with trash you might note that according to my tab chart in the ring thread 166 showed no tabs, so that makes a very cool number to dig so long as you don't find some odd tab in your home town that reads just like that. I don't, and it could be a ring or some other good find as well. Odd numbers in the 170 to 171 range are also very interesting to dig. Just a hair below zinc pennies. One of the targets I keep popping when digging those is shoe lace holes, but something like a large gold ring or a small silver piece of jewlery could read in that area too. Never know what you'll find by digging those solid locking repeatable wierd numbers that don't pop up often. That's also one of the major strengths of the great VDI resolution on this machine, yet it's not jumpy or all over the place on good targets like machines with near this resolution, such as my Explorers. Makes it much harder to tell the good from the bad on other machines that aren't as good at locking solid on good targets, which are usually uniform in shape.

The info is much appreciated. Just need to receive this new toy, and get her out for some real time experimenting. I ordered a 5" coil yesterday, but came home today only to find a paypal refund because the coils are on back order, and sunray is not making any (?)
