:minelab:hi i am new to this metal detecting hobby i just bought a time ranger but would like a gold detector and would like a used machine i figured the gold hawk would be a starting point can anyone tell me about this machine it had a good report i read at lost treasure magazine thank you for your time happy hunting.:bounty:

Not much different to an XT 18000, discs a little better maybe. Try to get a hold of a s/h GMT or MXT, better machines by far.

Hand built in the states, best auto tracking on a VLF, SAT control for control over threshold recovery in bad variable ground. Visual id screen on both, MXT showing target ID numbers as well as ground balance reference numbers, GMT shows the ground ref numbers as well as mineralisation ones but not the target id numbers. Iron probability meters on both. Very solid and reliable detectors. Both capable of finding gold down to mere detectable flakes. Check out the Whites site or Jimmy Sierra for info on both.

He's just gettin all worked up cause you have the message in all capitals, don't worry bout it, he means well, take care, and hope you get things sorted out on getting what kind of detector you can use, Happy Hunting,-> Bugar:detecting:

Nuggets just joking mate, writing in capital letters is how you yell on a computer. No I wouldn't buy a Golden Hawk, they look good, sort of like a mini SD type detector but they are still virtually an old XT 18000. Same machine different wrapper. Not saying they are rubbish because they are OK, I have used one over here in Australia, but if I had the choice it would be an MXT. Still though if your budget doesn't allow and the Hawk is really cheap you will still end up with a good machine. The Hawk never took off here in Oz even though they were made here. I have in fact never even seen anyone out in the field on our gold fields, and I live right smack in the middle of them, using one since they were released around 10 years ago. Give or take a year. A good oldie that you could get cheap is the model before the XT 18000 which is the XT 17000. But, the problem now with older Minelab detectors is this, I have been told that Minelab have decided to no longer repair detectors older than 10 years of age. This is here in Australia and I am guessing everywhere else as well.
