Hi Everyone,
I am new to the sport/hobby,actually I've never used a metal detector in my life, somehow I just could never find the time, but plan to devote time ,energy and whatever it takes to succeed in this hobby. I want to buy an Explorer! I have read really good things about them on forums from actual users, like everyone here. Here is the question: Is it Too much detector for a newbie? I realize it is advanced, and would take cosiderable patience and practice on my part, and I am willing to devote the time and energy, but still I have doubts...
Your imput, advice would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Don

Even the simplest models take a while to learn how good targets respond as compared to bad ones, I think it might be easier for a new person to learn than somebody that has used other machines for a long amount of time, I also dont think its as difficult as many others are to learn.. using it isnt really a problem, its learning how to get the most out of it that takes a while...you should be able to start finding stuff right away, even if you just go by high tones..the real secret is getting the coil over it <IMG SRC="/forums/images/smile.gif" BORDER=0 ALT=":)">

There is no such thing as too much detector, Just not enough user to justify buying such a expensive detector. What I mean is that if you know and are set to learn and enjoy this hobby to the highest level you should pop for a top of the line unit. If your not shur that you will enjoy this as a hobby then start off with a midrange unit or used high end unit. Then later trade up. If you just want to try it out get borrow one from a friend or rent one for the weekend from a dealer. The explorer is not hard to learn just turn it on and start hunting in the pre programed coin pattern. It is hard to master it. Me I'm still learning but am glad I went for the Explorer after several years away from the hobby.

Go for the explorer its not that hard to learn. I am also new to the machine. The more you use it the better it gets. Ask for advice from a forum like this. Good luck

Don,
All good advice you have got, now for the real test. Would you be happy with spending a couple of day finding new coin or no coins at all?? Digging holes and not finding anything there because you cant find it because you didnt pinpoint the right location?? even though you didnt find anything in 2 days would you be willing to read some more and go out and try it again?? If these answers are yes than you have what it takes to learn the Explorer or any detector as it take a lot of patience and a lot of pratice to become good with the Explorer, but when you do you will be amazed at what is in the ground. Some people learn fast while other takes a while and it all depends on how much you use and understand the detector.
The Explorer is quite the detector and will do very good for you if you do decide on one.
Good luck and if and when you do get one remember there is no dumb questions so ask away and some one will answer them.

about two months ago. New to detecting and new to the XS. I'm so happy with this hobby and my XS.
Rick brings up some great points with his questions be sure to ponder them because what he says is true. If you think your going to give up easy think his questions over real good.
Where are you in FL I'm in Punta Gorda if your close maybe you could check my XS out and get better informed. There are others in FL maybe you could find someone near you if you posted on the FBS forum.
