Minelab fix our Machines

Minelab has created a monster for the average user as far as pin pointing goes. The XS goes
very deep but what good is it if it take an
hour to retrieve the target in lawns and parks. So, Minelab, what do you say?
How about coming up with a fix, and I don't mean buying a garden shovel! I paid top money for your machine and I just bought a Whites for my wife. I hope that you get the idea.

If it where me I wouldnt worry nor ask for them to fix the PP, because in all actuality its no different then using a DD coil on an Whites DFX.
I would guess you are referring to Whites standard Concentric coil (the 950 loop) ease of pinpointing?
Well, there is obviously an advantage to PP with the Concentric but that advantage is PALE in comparrison to the advantage the DDs, WOTS, X-12s, stock Minelab XS coils etc offer as far as equal penetration as opposed to the concentrics conical penetration and it equal depth throughout the sweep.
Practice u will find that yes it is different but can be mastered rather quickly with practice.

The Whites have a seperate sensitivity adjustment for pinpointing. That's one feature that I really miss on my explorer.
The DFX/DD still pinpoints and is better for guessing the target size. Not a huge problem, but it would be nice on the XS.

In the hands of a trained operator. The Explorer is a deadly weapon and will stomp any major name detector on the market out in the field on depth. Give it time! You'll be sorry and maybe even a little embarrassed that you had thought the Explorer was a mistake.
We all have felt what you're feeling at the moment. Raise the coil off of the ground just a little to pinpoint and you see that there are several other ways to help pinpointing.
Have you ordered the X-1 probe? Try going to a smaller coil before you start using the 10.5 coil if you have one? I started with the Minelab 7.5" coil when I first started. Made a big difference and started me in the right direction.
Send me an e-mail and maybe I can guide you in the right direction over the phone?
HH, Paul

They all seem to see the on edge coins just fine. Guess what? Those are the coins most other machines have missed. Guess what else? Those are the hardest for any machine including your Whites if it could see it in the first place to pinpoint... Now go take your medicine and learn it... Or we'll email your wife and tell her what you did to her... <IMG SRC="/forums/images/biggrin.gif" BORDER=0 ALT=":D">
Good luck and keep posting the questions... Guvner..

out having pinpointing problems with the Explorer because of the DD coil, whites dfx users had the same problem when there DD coil first came out.
Heres a tip on pinpointing that was sent to me that has helped 100%, my holes are alot smaller and the more you use it the less pinpointing is a problem so you can learn the real power of the machine, tone id:
Hers the e-mail tip!
I want you to try a little tip I learned for pin pointing. Put a coin down
in your yard just on the surface. Swing the coil side to side about 4 or 5
inches over the coin with just a little wiggle motion ...the wiggle motion
should not be too fast. You should here the tone each time you pass over the
target whether you sweep from left to right or visa versa. Try to get the
clearest signal you can. While you are still doing that tight, slow, wiggle
sweep.....close your eyes......and slowly draw the coil back toward you. You
will here the signal get weaker and start to break up. When you no longer
here anything...set the coil on the ground and the coin should be right in
front of the coil! When you are out in the field, that is the first
horizontal cut you should make for your plug...right in front of the coil.
The next two should be vertical cuts on each side of your first horizontal
cut and then just fold the 3 sided plug away from you. I never use the
pinpointing button anymore because I have gotten pretty good using this
trick and I hardly ever scratch a coin but I am pretty careful anyway just
in case there might be a piece of junk in the hole with the coin that might
make pin pointing a little trickier.
Give it a try and see if it works for you.

The DFX, even with the DD coil, is much better at pinpointing. What do I mean by better? The pinpoint is more accurate due in no small part to the VCO it has. Also, the pinpointing trigger is much more user friendly than the pushbutton on the Explorer. The DFX has the two bars that aid in letting you know when you are precisely over the strongest signal, and it has a depth reading in pinpoint mode. Finally, the DFX has a setting for increasing signal strenght in Pinpointing mode. The Explorer's pinpoint signal strength seems to be less than the Disc mode.
The Explorer is a great detector, there is no doubt about that. When it comes to pinpointing though, let's just say that it does not lead the field.
The X-1 and the Periscope probes help, but there have been times that I've had to give up on some of my Explorer targets even with the use of the Periscope. That is never the case with the DFX, and recovery is noticeably faster when using it over the Explorer. This is especially true on deeper targets. The DFX seems to be more accurate with depth, where the Explorer seems to become less accurate. I don't have an explanation for that, but it happens.
I'm not saying this is a fatal flaw, but I'm hoping future Minelab machines have some improvement in the area of pinpointing. I would not let that stop me from buying Minelabs however.
Also related to this subject is the X1 probe. I've decided that I'll probably get one, although I have the Periscope. There are just some occasions (such as gravel) that I feel like The X1 would be more helpful. I also need something to help me more quickly discriminate out more than one target in the same hole. I'm not sure this will help that much or not, but I guess I just want to be prepared for anything. I'm sure I would still use the Periscope more often as it allows you (when you can pinpoint close enough with your detector) locate the targets while they are still in the ground. By doing this you can detetermine a targets size and other information to help you decide whether to dig it up or not.

The DD coil windings are in nature the same as Minelabs.
They are not hard to pinpoint with at all you just need to get familair with its technique.
Yes VCO is nice if you like that scream, but in all actuality the thing that helps mostly for new users is the DFX's Ratchet Pinpoint which shrinks the object to aid in pinpointing, I personally do not like RPP because you can get a better idea of whats down there by the size of the signal you recieve.
I guess opinions are all different and thats what makes us individuals, I just sold my DFX on e-bay, if I wanted another Whites it would be a XLT.
I personally feel the XLT is just a more stable machine then the DFX.
But I like my XS and really dont need 2 high end machines.
Just keep practicing and you will see it works quite well.
