Minelab Finally Responded:thumbdown:

I sent a follow up e-mail to the good folks at Minelab explaining that I had already sent them an e-mail with customer feedback 2 weeks prior and that I found it unacceptable as a customer that they had not responded to at least verify receipt of my e-mail.
Nenad Lonic of Minelab Australia did respond and politely apologized for not getting back to me sooner and explained that they are short staffed in customer service at the moment. Nenad acknowledged the issues I had raised in my e-mail as valid but went on to explain that Minelab was concentrating on the lower end of the market with their X-terra series as this is where they percieve the market to be. Nenad went on to state that the underwater market was very small and the sales of the Excalibur quite low, so other models were to take precedence over this model. Nenad agreed that the Excalibur could use some updating and stated that the knob issue had been addressed but in the meantime we as underwater detectorists would have to rely upon aftermarket suppliers to address the issues stated in my e-mail.
So in short, be happy with what you have Excal users cause that's all you're going to get.
The law of economics proves to be right again, economically speaking Excal users just aren't on the map as far as Minelab is concerned. Time to look into getting some aftermarket repairs for my Excal's deficiencies. I need a straight shaft, new waterproof headphones, battery packs and a replacement bolt for my coil.

That's the Facts,

PS I still really like my Excal, that's what started this whole discussion in the first place. Somebody will come along with something better, until then I'll patch up my Excal and keep finding gold.

My plan exactly! That and I see a hopped up, underwater PI unit in my future as well.:) I wonder what Eric Foster has coming up in his Skunkworks?? Something Good and Something Darned Expensive BUT I'll Bite.

I need something waterproof, durable, interchangeable coils and 3ft penetration in ideal conditions. Hope you can help Mr. Bill.

Cheers All,

You can only try SO Much! If minelab isn't interested, that's their choice. I'm going to make my choice and allocate some of my detecting budget elsewhere.

Well, if there's any silver lining to their response at all, I guess it's that there aren't all that many water hunters out there in the big picture of metal detecting. That just means there's more for the rest of us.

Not the best news from Minelab, but at least the guy was honest and didn't try to feed you a line of crap.

Minelab has an attitude that 3rd party manufacturers just love... "we know of our deficiencies, but we're not going to do anything about it since there are 3rd party solutions that do that job for us (for a small fee, of course)".

Trust me, I know what it's like to be in a niche market (I'm a Mac user), so I can sympathize. It sucks to know that you're the furthest target on the radar.

I'm not trying to bash Minelab, just that with the popularity of online forums increasing, and with the hubbub that surrounds the Excalibur at these forums, that they would be quick to keep their product updated. Maybe sales are lagging until the problems are fixed?

The thing is they'll also alienate the 3rd-party manufacturers that are making a profit off of these deficiencies, and then it turns into a lose-lose situation from a business suit, boardroom, bean counting point of view... extra costs and bad blood.

They might just consider also lowering the price a bit, because that could also jack up sales... not many people want to drop $1100 on a detector... I got sticker shock at spending under $400.

Electronics are insanely expensive here and there is no variety to choose from. I pay 33% duty on all electronics plus shipping, so a custom battery is cost prohibitive to have made on the island. I'd go $100 for a battery like that.

Cheers,

I will need your old battery pod for them to rebuild. Mail me your old pod, I'll get it rebuilt and ship it back. They bill me $37.95 plus tax which takes it to $39.95 total.

They don't stock the batteries and it takes them around 5 days to order & build the pod. I figure with $40.00 for the pod it will will cost around $10 to mail it back. So, for around $50 you can get one. How much duty will they sock you on it? I figure 1 week to get to me, 1 week for the rebuild and 1 week back. Do you have a spare alkaline pod to use for 3 weeks??

Let me know what you want to do and I'll be happy to set you up.

Thanks Ron, I really appreciate the help. My old battery hasn't failed me yet but I do notice it's not holding as much charge any more so it is just a question of time. I don't have an old battery case or a back up as I only bought the Excal in late April. However, I can always buy a NiCad battery from Minelab and throw the insides away to get the case, either that or keep it in reserve for when my current battery fails.
Let me see about getting a new battery shipped to you from Minelab and then we can change up the guts of it.
I'll send you a PM.

Thanks Mate,

,so far i don't have any problems with Excal not with battery pack,
not with headphones, not with bolt on my coil.
Anyway thanks for sharing BDA and i think you have to start repairs from a straight shaft, huge improvement.

Alex.
