Can anyone tell me which small coil I should opt for, for my Explorer XS - the 8" minelab round coil which comes complete with lower stem or the Coiltek 9"x8" 'Little Joey' oval one? What are the pro's and con's apart from the oval coil being

Mike,
I havnt used either, but I have heard the minelab 8" is great on the grass & the slightly smaller coil (other than the orig 10")helps with target ID in trashy areas, I have also heard the joey oval coil is great to get into tight spots you cant with round coils but it is known to a false a bit & doesnt like wet grass.Hope this helps.

I got an 8" Minelab coil when I bought my Explorer. I start in an area with my 10.5 incher and when I determine the area's trashy I switch to the 8"... work great for me and I don't see much difference in depth penetration between it and the 10.5". Pinpointing's a lot easier too. I also use it when I'm hunting in scrub, weeds, bushes, etc. I've been thinking lately of just leaving the 8" on my machine and switching to the bigger one when the area seems to not be too trashy or when I want to cover more ground.

Get yourself a 5 inch coil. They work great in trash. The Sunray, excelerator, they seperate alot better in high trash then the Joey.

I must agree wiyh Sgt Ski, the 8inch minelab coil works great. I have two explorers. One I leave the 8 inch on and the other I use the 10 1/2 inch or the excelerater on it. So there is never much time lost when in the field changing coils.

Thanks to Sgt Ski, Murdoch, Larry and Jim P for your responses. You should all have received an e-mail from me. I'm gonna go for the Minelab 8" coil, seems like the best bet. Even though my searching is done in non-trashy open fields and farmland in the southwest of England, it'll be handy in longish grass and stubble. Anyone else with any additional comments will be welcome. Mike
