I would like to know if anyone can help me with these ?
1.I just purchased a minelab explorer xs and am going to be hunting in West Virginia and have been told that the clay and heavy mineralization of this state is hard to hunt, any suggestions on settings or how togo about this.(my xs will be here on 2/07/03 and I am trying to get a jump by doing a liitle research)
2.I have an 8" coil coming with the package but is back ordered when it gets here what one should I learn with the stock or the 8"
3.this is some of where and what I will be hunting, two old highschools that have shut down the old football bleachers old fairgrounds and stock car bleachers, campgrounds and old closed churches still standing I also have three grave yards on are 750 acre farm that is nothing but woods and no real trail showing how they arrived to these sites but was going to hunt around them trees grown up everywhere some markers early 1800's.I honestly believe that if any of these areas have ever been hunted it was not done seriouly or with good equipment I never see anyone at the schools etc.
4.I have read settings by Mike Moultry and don't know if I should start out on his settings first or maybe someone else could give me some ideas on how to start out.I think the first place I am going to hunt is the old schools and their Bleachers.
5.I would some info on starting a club for my area.
I also would be interested in someone to come hunt with me on my farm and other areas,I know the location of the old houses that my Great grandmother and grandfather where born but the house have long since disappeared.
6.In return I would be glad to help any and all out in any Hunting, rifles, shotguns, archery,or Bass fishing tips techniques for this is my speacialty and am friends with most of the Arkansas pros on tour and a few others.I lived beside and grew up by a famous shot gun smith, who builds the best turkey tube around,I'll guarentee it.
7.Thanks to all who can give me help and a better in sight to this Hobbie.Rick Vann

That's a lot of questions.
First off, what kind of detector did you use before?
The Explorer is unlike any other detector and takes some time getting used to.
I would start out using the iron mask and set it at about 2/3rds of the screen open.Perhaps some other posters can help you with some other settings to start out with.
The variety of tones and noises is going to drive you crazy and it takes time before you can open up the screen all of the way and be able to tell a good target from a bad one.
I would use the standard coil to start with and only use the small coil in really noisey/trashy areas.
I would say under bleachers is a place for a small coil.
Pay attention to the depth meter on this detector as it can be very helpfull. Always dig signals showing a depth halfway or deeper on the depth meter.
You'll also be surprized at the weight.
The weight will wear you out until you get used to it.
Another very important thing is sweep speed. This detector has a SLOW processor as compared to all others. Sweep slow and you'll get better seperation as well as depth. This detector needs to be swept slow so it can lock onto a target.
You'll be covering 5 times more area with each sweep which greatly increases your odds of finding something but at the same time, that coil configuration makes pinpointing a lot harder.
I would strongly suggest getting the Sunray probe for it.
If you don't get frustrated with it and wrap it around a tree, you'll be finding more good finds in 4 weeks than you ever thought possible.
Lastly, if you know of someone who uses one, and can go out, with them it will help alot. It will save you weeks of learning time.
Good luck, Tony in FROZEN OHIO.

I will be in Winchester VA in early March to detect for 10 days. I would be glad to hook up and show you what I know. I have an XS. I usually get to Winchester once a year to hit some good spots with my brother.

I'm from up near Cleveland but to the East a bit.
It's frozen with snow up here now so I need to travel to detect.

lots of people looked but didn't get much help but I thank those who did write and I guess that I have researched this enough everyone took it I hit it right on the head, also I am interested in getting a Minelab Musketeer Advantage have good things about this one,Kellyco has it for $339 in there package does anyone know of one in this price range that would be as good,I am getting it as a back up but my girlfriend and her kids will be using it too.
