Minelab Equinox 800 - Civil War Relic Hunting - Finding What the other Detectors Missed

Folks, I've been rethinking my YouTube channel lately and making plans for the upcoming adventures. In doing so, I've been looking at some of my older videos and thought I would share this one in case someone is interested.

This was the 3rd time I used the Minelab Equinox 800. A couple of days before, I got in these woods and nearly got drowned in a rain that snuck in on me.

This patch of woods was the first place I found 50 bullets in one day and where I found over 100 in a day later. At this point in time, I was sure it had been hunted out as I had visited it with many detectors and combination of coils over the years. I was blown away when I took the XP Deus in there and found a lot of bullets. I didn't figure it was worth going back with the Equinox, but I was pleasantly surprised.

Here's the video that shows my settings at that point in time.

I hope you enjoy it.

The equinox is a game changer! Nice finds !

Very cool digs! Congratulation!

You made some amazing finds Larry!!
To be honest, I am not at all surprised at how much you found with the Equinox after using the other detectors you mentioned at this site on previous hunts.
I have experienced the same thing while coin shooting at sites that I have been over with many other detectors too.
With the Equinox, it seems you either love it or hate it.. no in between.. I love mine!!
You made a great point about slowing down when running a low recovery/ reactive speed.
I think that is where many that do not like this detector have failed to do... Minelab promoted this as a very fast detector, and it is, but to find the items others have missed, you need to slow down.
That is an impressive amount of bullets you found, and proves what the Equinox can do when used correctly.

I know you said you had hunted this place before so do you think you just missed these bullets or were they just too deep for the machine you were fist using?

I would say a combination of both. I'd say between my buddy and I we have found over 300 bullets in these woods. As time went on, I learned how to slow down. This was always like a test garden for me and I almost always found relics there. But with all the great detectors I used there over the years, I feel it's finally almost cleaned out.

One thing I learned from REVIER and NCToad if you visit multiple forums, is that guys who spend alot of time in the field have multiple detectors. They all see things the others don't.

That said. My Nox 600 has slayed since day one sites I thought I hunted out with my old f70 and absolutely pulled some great coins from places others have obviously killed.

Matter of fact. I'm finding new life I'm some spots the 600 went silent with the 11" coil but using the 6" coil and tracking.

Trailduster, I have been hearing quite a lot about the 6' coil for the equinox. Is this coil as good as the reviews say it is? I hear it still reads pretty deep for a smaller coil.

Mr. Confetrit the 6” coil is dynamite packed with incredible depth and separation. I receive super depth (8” on a planted clad dime in my backyard) with the 6” coil with a recovery of 3. Thing is, increasing recovery speed can actually mask targets. Let me explain…
In my test garden ( which has a lot of iron bits of junk from the former owners. The husband must of worked on small engine equipment as their are little rusty screws, bolts, bits of wire, wire connectors, you name it.) my goal was to hit an eight inch clad dime with the 6” coil.
Setup: park1 - multi, all-metal mode, 50 tones, iron bias - F2: 0, sensitivity 23, recovery 2, 3,4,5 and forget the rest. I’ll explain why.
I started out at a very low recovery of 2 ( I have the equinox 800) and hit the 8” dime with zero issues. Smacked it hard. Recovery of 3, smacks it hard ( mind you I’m not changing my slow scanning speed just recovery speed) here comes the change: recovery 4 still hits the dime but it’s intermittent and blanks out. Recovery 5 I have a very hard time of hitting the dime and starts reporting iron. Hmm 🤔 let me investigate…
I found out there was a small rusty nail on one side of the plug and a tiny rusty threaded screw on the other. What was happening the recovery was so fast, it started reporting on these two iron items instead of the dime. Once I dropped my recovery back down to 3, no iron tone and doesn’t exist at this “speed”. I’m not saying someone can’t run a super fast recovery because of course they can. However the trade off could be missing good targets deeper that are mixed in with ferrous junk. Of course with a 6” coil, that’s why we are using it to begin with: to get in between this crap💩. To summarize: if someone wants super depth and separation, be mindful of lower recovery speeds and scan very slowly. Rewards will be given to those that have the patients to hunt like this.

Mr. Jimmy, Thank you so much for the informative information you sent on the 6' Minelab coil. This is great news. I hunt and swing the coil slow anyways, so this would not be an issue to me. Thanks again for your time and info. concerning this. Take Care and stay Warm.

You are welcome. Right now New England is having a good ol' time with blizzard conditions. Huge snowdrifts are a bigger problem then the snow itself. I'm hunkered down and waiting for it to end. However I know Spring is right around the corner!
