Minelab CTX 3030

I like to upgrade from my Whites Dualfield to a Minelab CTX for the beach , salt and fresh water. Is this cumbersome in the water with the 17 inch coil? What is the depth with the 17 inch in saltwater? Also is this machine including the 17 inch heavy on the beach. Can a person swing this on the beach for around 4 hours without a sore arm and shoulder? I appreciate the imput from those who use them frequently on the beach and water. Thanks.

Hey Coinhawker. The CTX is great on the beach and in the salt water. The 17" coil is cumbersome in the water as there is a lot of resistance in the water due to its size and it is heavy on the beach in general in my opinion. I went back to using the stock 11" coil as I found that with the 17" there was a lot of arm fatigue. The 11" of course sacrifices the size of the area covered and probably some depth too. If you want to use the 17" you might consider a harness. Happy Hunting!

I swing the 17 on the beach and have no problems. Much lighter than my Excal and CZ21 even with the 17 inch coil. In the water smaller coils tend to be easier due to drag and moving water so I would imagine the 17 is not really a water coil.

Depends on your age and fitness level. I recommend a harness with the 17 since you will (at least initially) be using muscles in a way that you aren't accustomed to. You can always just try without and buy or build one later. I built a couple with stuff I had lying around.

Though you get extra depth with the 17" coil, pin pointing is terrible with it.

I have now decided to stick with the 11" coil as its more trouble and time-consuming.

Make sure you seal everything on the ctx as water can get in.

I thought so too at first but now have no problem getting the target...except for quarters which still have me running around in circles sometimes. I could not imagine this coil underwater though.

The 17" is tough in the water. It is not bad on mud flats since the ground is leveled. In dry sand it tired me out even with a harness due to the uneven surface. Pinpointing was also an issue. So I went back to using the 11" for dry, in the water and mud flats.

I also have the Dual Field and use it exclusively on the slopes when the waves are hitting me and sand is refilling the whole. I find the Dual Field has a faster response as the target can be moving around in the whole as collapses with each wave.
