Minelab Coin Mode...modifications?

vikingvic

New member
Hi Folks,

I am fairly new to the E-trac and have not played around much with the settings.
I have been using the Minelab Coin Mode.
If you are using this mode and have moddified it could you tell me what modifications you made and what prompted them?

Thanks in advance for any and all info you can give me, all advice will be greatly appreciated.

Open it up down to about FE 20. It is very common to see variations in the FE numbers depending on depth, coin orientation, soil conditions and so on...

I haven't seen FE numbers drop below 20 on a coin myself, but some people have seen FE numbers go as low as 24'ish.

Once you get some experience...say 30-50 hours, maybe try AndyS Coin pattern, I've had a lot of success with it.

Myself I use tighter patterns in high iron/trashy sites, and open patterns like Andy's in the cleaner sites. Comes down to you own style.

Hi there Vic...............

I agree with Gregg's comment:-

The only thing that I would add, is to dig primarily by the REPEATABILITY of any tone, using the numbers only as a guide or rough indicator.

Note the numbers, then dig and discover their relativity, as dictated by target size, metal, depth, ground and any other 'things' that may also be in the search-head's 'view'.

Experience and patience.................Enjoy your E-Trac..............TheMarshall

P.S. :- The SUGGESTED Sensitivity level indicator, gives you the only clue available regarding ground / contamination conditions.

About 16 is a normal level, and it drops lower as the situation deteriorates.

Running Auto @ 16 level with +3 gives about 8 to 9 inches max., on a 1 inch diameter coin.

26 to 27 manual offers depths up to 10 or 12 inches on the same coin, in good conditions.

I'd be interested in hearing more about these low FE numbers. I have had coins bounce with low FEs but the CO numbers stay high enough to dig. Are these coins with the super low 20-24 numbers lock ons? As in a 20-47, 24-47 that has no better sounding bounce that would make you dig it? I'm thinking not. I guess this gets into one way hits then and what you dig... I can see a nail and a coin and if you sweep the vertical of the nail, you get a null or a iron hit. Turn to 90 degrees and you get the coin hit. Generally in that case, I also try X-ing the target at a 45 degree angle from the original X-ing and see what happens. I am finding enough coins with iron in the hole that I am not worried I am missing them.

Open the coin pattern out as I said, if you get a two way repeable signal, dig it!

12-47, 20-47 and 24-47 will all sound the same in conduct tones. (I haven't used ferrous)

CO numbers typically are solid but can move around when close to trash/iron. I had a coin pinpoint as iron in the bottom right but the audio was too good to ignore, glad I decided to dig it, just shows numbers aren't everything...audio is the key.

TheMarshall is right though......Experience and patience! Right on the money, you'll find every time you go out the better you'll get.

One more thing.....E-trac loves a slow swing speed, especially in the trash. Read Andy's book if you haven't already, changing FE numbers is one of the many topics the book covers.

Cheers,
Greg

Greg - are you referring to a particular page in the book? Or do you have a place to download the pattern? ( Is it something you can upload to the forum?)

Thanks.....

Andy offered the pattern for download on this site. I don't have time to search for it now, boss is busting my balls, but I'll try to find a link for you later if someone dosn't post one in the meantime.

Cheers
