Minelab being made in Malaysia?

Beale

New member
I saw this link on another site. Do you think this will in any way effect the quality or the continued research of our beloved X-Terra's or for that fact any Minelab? Just wondering what your take on this is, Beale.

That's the scoop I heard from my dealer, that they moved manufacturing from Ireland to Malaysia. I just got a new 705 and a Safari, they both have Ireland on them. We just have to trust Codan/Minelab to continue to make great products for the consumer market. With the price of gold the way it is, I think they are going to continue to build anything that will detect gold. It might turn out like the great Fisher/First Texas buyout where detectors made in Ireland will be prefered over the Malaysian detectors. I hope they keep on top of the service more than sales, my dealer said that he has a hell of a time getting in to even order anything because of the high sales volume, they are back ordered on the 705 as we speak..............MO

Just hope they don't locate the factory too close to the coast, they have had BIG WAVES wash things away over there lately:yikes:

Here's a post I made back in June:

It's just south of Vietnam.
The quality will still be just as good. No good for the folks in Ireland though.
Given that the US dollar is a basket case and heading south, manufactures outside the US are going to have to reduce costs where they can so that they can still remain cost competitive in that market. It's good news for those of us who use US built detectors because they are only going to get cheaper to buy.
Perhaps Minelab could have moved their manufacturing to the US instead.:poke:
Mick Evans.

Here is my take,

Dirtpoor I'm with pistolpete Taiwan over mainland China any day of the week. Not as good as Japanese stuff though (and a long ways from it).

I read the Explorer posts on the subject. Don't run out and start selling your detectors just yet.

I know from experience the Malays have some serious Quality Control issues... However, Seems to me that Plexus is a top flight name. We will have to wait and see what the future holds for Minelab. You will still have many of the same engineers, if not all, putting the technology together for the machines we have come to recognize as one of the top names in the industry. While shifting mfg. to Malaysia, Minelab ownership is still Australian and profits go to Australia. The Aussies are not highly likely to flush a quality brand name just to save a buck, think about current economic conditions.

Worst case will probably be that there is a Quality deficit in the short term. When I say this I do not mean that the Minelabs will lack in forward thinking (although possible), but a short term suffrage caused by the shifting of mfg. from the current location to its future location. That would be typical to almost any mfg. relocation, and in training a new workforce. These things are never seamless.

Now then, what I will have to consider in my own future purchases becomes political and religious. After all Malaysia is a Muslim nation, and with that I do have a problem. Still though the profits will still end up in Australia and the good ol US of A. All of that could mean Minelab will have more money to put into R & D and come out with even more advanced products in the future, all the while holding mfg. costs down by paying a Muslim $1 an hour.

Bummer for the Irish (I am 3/4 Irish).

Well, My 70 will be with me as long as it is working properly, and there will always be some decent used Minelabs to be found in the future, if things go bad.

Thanks Beale and BarnacleBill for the information below:

>>The name of the company that will be doing the manufacturing is Plexus and it's headquarters are in Neenah, WI. Here is a link to their operational locations:
http://www.plexus.com/plexusgloballocations.php

They do a lot of Mil-Spec & Aerospace manufacturing so one would assume they know which end of a soldering iron to hold. They also do manufacturing for companies like Coca-Cola, so if one's a Pepsi man I guess you could have something to complain about.

>>The majority of the manufacturing done in Ireland would be moved to Codan's manufacturing service provider, Plexus, based in Penang, Malaysia.

I wonder why Plexus can not manufacture Minelab products in the USA with 9 locations there? There must be alot of people who need a job badly in Wisconsin or other states and will work for a little less.

Or manufacture in Scotland where they have 2 locations or at the 1 location in Romania? Because 2 of my grandparents immigrated from the Romania area and my other 2 grandparents immigrated from Scotland.

Plexus might be another US out-sourcing company. Manufacturing(and jobs) in the US have collapsed due to cheap Asian costs and in general until the US passes legislation to have things manufactured in the US, jobs and money will continue to fly out of the country. The consumer would pay more to have things made here but it will keep vastly more money and jobs here in the US, Canada, and Australia. With more money staying at home, instead of in foreign hands. The amount of US dollars owned abroad is staggering due to selling products back to the US that should be made in here. The only advantage to all of this is cheaper manufacturing for companies and cheaper consumer goods. Do you want the laws and legislation passed to have goods made here? Then are you willing to pay more for goods to have many more jobs and vastly more money stay at home? Until a law is passed, in the mean time DO buy Made in the USA, Canada, and Australia products as a first choice in your shopping habits. Until then we will also be temped something like this: Boy, the Chinese made Crecent Wrench that is half-the-price will be hard to pass up.

Although Minelab do manufacture their Pulse Induction SD/GPX gold machines in Australia.

Minelab's $6m sale to India
December 01, 2009 10:00am
MINELAB is preparing to send its first shipment of mine detectors overseas, as part of a $6 million deal struck with the Indian Ministry of Home Affairs. The contract to supply 3000 detectors to the Indian government is a coup for the Torrensville(South Australia) firm, which has recorded ``exceptional'' first-half sales. He says Minelab's strong performance - from sales of its countermine, consumer range and gold mine products - is expected to impact significantly and positively on its parent company Codan's first-half results. Buoyant market conditions for its gold detection equipment also prompted Minelab to employ 50 extra people since August, Mr Charlesworth says. ``The rise in the price of gold as we all know is quite phenomenal, over $US1100 an ounce, as increased prospecting activity occurs around the world,'' he says. "We are seeing an old-fashioned gold rush at the moment, driven by the price of gold, and our machine is quite unique in its ability to find gold. We are running three shifts a day trying to make enough product.'' He says Codan's first-half profit is likely to be a record.

And Minelab(Codan) will save another $500,000 by closing their Irish manufacturing, and have that manufacturing done in Malaysia instead by Plexus.

I also know Whites does manufacture in the USA. I think Tesoro(AZ), Garrett(TX), and Fisher may also? Does anyone know?

And also I forgot to add this below from BarnacleBill:

"They(Minelab) are putting their manufacturing in the hands of a very large 25 year old U.S. company(Plexus)."

Yep, ever since nafta, which big business wanted so they could line their pockets more, don't care about jobs here in US.
That is the reason unemployment is @ 10%, I've got the same thinking as 3 years ago when I wrote this:
http://www.findmall.com/read.php?20,316124,316309#msg-316309

But the subject of ML is different since they have never been based here in the States as far as manufacture.
So called US made stuff many times has the parts farmed out to be made over seas and assembly done in Mexico.

The average monthly wage for a semi-skilled production worker in Malaysia is between $1.15 and $2.75 per hour. The US minimum wage is $7.25, and even higher in some States. Politics aside, global economics is not on the side of the American worker.

Over the last two decades, the US economy experienced a boom in offshoring and a doubling of imports of manufactured goods from low-wage countries. Over this same period, roughly 6 million US jobs were lost in manufacturing.

Thanks for the great feedback Steve and Randy! Very good!
