Minelab Audio Booster

Anybody have any experience using the audio/signal booster device on the Sov GT? I remember using one in the 80's on my Garrett Groundhog and they seemed to be a lot cheaper than the ones being offered today on Ebay. Does it really offer an advantage over having the headphone volume turned way up? This would be an advantage for me hunting on the beach with the waves crashing in.

Shaun's Sovereign Amp actually boosts the power to the coil. So yes it helps a lot, probably more then the other ones that just boost the signal to the head phones.

Google, shaun's minelab detector amplifiers

then click open field reports, this amp is not being produced any longer, but is the best thing out there, you can find them used once in a while though. I heard they are now selling for more then the original price of $300, so that tells a story in itself. Watch for one if you like digging!

Kind Regards,
Steve

Thanks for the response Steve. It's a shame that sometimes the "good old" stuff isn't being made anymore. I saw a signal booster on Ebay for about $125, but I don't know how good it is. I used to use one in the 80's made by Depthmaster which looks exactly the same as the one I'm seeing on Ebay. Since I have minimal hearing loss in one ear and I primarily beach hunt I can use all the extra help I can get.

I feel the first thing is using your GT and getting to know it well plus using a good set of headphones will do better than any booster I have seen. Being you want to hear those slight little tone changes you need a set of head phones that fit good, blockout any back ground noise and yet have some good volume you can adjust if needed. The main thing I have learned with the Sovereign since 1996 is by using it and really knowing it as this detector will actualy talk to you once you know it lanquage, with this come the depth some of us talk about.

Get your self a set of Black Widow head phones and you will be able to hear very well at the beach or
find someone on the forums that can make you up a set of Peltors and then you will be able to hear even
more! If I remember right there are some post that said the amp did not work all that great when used on the
beach, but don't that my word on that as fact. Go to Search on this and type it in and you should be able
to get all the information you need on it.

Thanks for all the feedback. I agree that good headphones do make a world of difference. I'm currently using Gray Ghost originals and have no complaints. I've heard good things about Black Widows, but when you're beach hunting in FL and it's really humid the thick padding can make your ears drip with sweat. I'm very prone to getting an inner infection because of a condition in my ear which has also resulted in minor hearing loss over time. That's why I was a fan of the Whites BHID for so long because it had light indicators. However, nothing in the VLF class beats the GT for depth from my experience.
