I noticed that inside the front cover of the September issue of Lost Treasure mag there is a 2 page layout for Minelab. Under the Excal one of the features lised is:"Powerful PI detection with discrimination. I thought that the Excal was a VLF. Has this changed or was this an error?

It is inferring that it has the depth of a PI. It's still a vlf machine

this was referred to previously in the forum.
per Minelab, apparently it was a misprint.
but in pinpoint mode...hmmm..........

no VLF will get the depth of a PI..max depth for my Sovereign and Excal is 15" on a dime...iv had PI's hit below 20" ...the trade off of no discrimination on the PI's is a major draw back for me.but is depth is all you want,ya cant beat a PI.

On my clean, white beach, my SOV GT with SEF coil and AMP enjoys a 2" depth advantage on coin/ring sized objects over my SD2200 and Goldquest SS.
I was as surprised as anybody but test after test gets the same results....now in mineralised sand then things change.

Yes sir, results are gonna vary from one location to another. There are very few absolutes in detecting and life as well.

The Sovereign amp that I see referred to seems to work very well.

I wonder if Minelab will incorporate some amplifier stages into their new Sovereign model to get the same effect?

Higher power requirements= more voltage and/ or higher current requirements=more and heavier batteries.

With Li-Ion batteries you can get the power you need to run the coil at Higher Power levels keep the same weight but the cost of the batteries increase substantially. I chose to use Li-Ion batteries in the Sovereign Amplifier to produce a quality product that has a run time that will meet everyones needs and more. But the result of that is a quality product that many people think is too expensive. The Batteries and Battery Charger are 25% of my cost to produce the Amp. I could use much less expensive batteries and charger but Im sure that I would have problems with run time and reliability which of course equals unhappy customers.
