Hello all,

Back in Wisconsin again. I checked out a local road construction site close to my house. I've hit these terraces many times over the years, got a two center a few weeks ago. Anyways discovered they had removed a bit more topsoil so I hit went over them again. It's dry and its like digging in concrete.

Long story short; as I was detecting had my eyes on the ground and saw a buffalo nickel laying on the ground ahead of me. When I got the coil over it could not get a nickel sound because of all the surrounding iron trash. If there had been a millimeter of dirt over it I would have walked on by. I could have stayed and tried changing sensitivity and hitting it from different directions but I was hot and tired and cranky so I just picked it up. A bit farther down the road spotted an IH well before I got the coil over it. This time the coin sounded off loud and clear.

The nickel served as a good reminder of how much we miss because of target masking from junk; I guess its kind of good thing or all parks would have been depleted of coins years ago. It's kind of bizarre to be looking at a coin while you are swing over it and not hearing it. And this is wide open screen except crown caps.

The XS did however get a few underground coins, merc, roosie, and a pile of wheats.

when you say wide open do you set it up in iron mask. i'm still learning the xs and didn't know if there's another way to open the screen all the way other than iron mask, thanks

Chuck,

One is in iron mask in which you bump the iron mask to nothing. In iron mask you don't have the options of rejecting other stuff. I can't remember what the other mode is called, but it is where you go and check or uncheck coins, crown caps, nails, etc. I run in this mode and only discriminate out crown caps because the sound like coins in Ferrous mode. Basically uncheck everything for an open screen in this mode.

i tried the open iron mask screen tonight but not ferrous sounds. first target was a piece of rusty wire that even gave the high sound when out of the ground. i switched to ferrous and got 2 memorials and 3 crown caps that sounded good. i'll try the other way but may have to wait until we get sound rain. thanks.

Chuck,

If you are hunting open screen you have to be in ferrous, otherwise every little nail and chunk of steel will sound like a coin. Get out of iron mask and go to smart screen and then X out the box for crown caps. It should make the lower right hand corner of your screen turn black. That will take care of those crown caps.

Chris

i still have a lot to learn and i've misplaced andy's book that i bought. i was thinking that in the smart screen that parts of the left side are already blacked out. i'll work with that the next time i get out. thanks.
